What is leprosy?
Leprosy is an infection caused by bacteria. Leprosy is not very contagious. (difficult to spread from person to person) Leprosy may take 3-5 years to show signs of illness.

Leprosy can start with painless patches. It destroys nerves. You can't feel pain.

Where is leprosy most common?

Treatment
Leprosy is easily treated with special antibiotics for 1-2 years. After antibiotic treatment is started, the disease is NOT contagious. Leprosy can come back.

What do people with leprosy worry about?


No Pain - they eventually cannot feel the parts of their body that have leprosy. Loss of fingers, toes, arms, and legs. Infections of fingers, toes, arms, and legs. Blindness. Rejection by society, shame, depression.
