Term 1 Integrated Unit

Our classroom and Our Routine

Rational
Due to the nature of the classroom dynamics this term and the changes the students have experienced compared to last year, this term the students have been studying the classroom and the classrooms routine. Students will participate in a number of activities that will become commonplace in the classroom over the year and will also be given opportunities to express themselves in order for their new teacher to get to know each student better. This unit contains less formal lessons and involves far more life and social skills to be implemented on a daily basis. There will be 4 distinct features of this unit. 1. 2. 3. 4. Also included in this unit of work are personal indicators as specified in each students IEP. Mathematical and Literacy indicators are also included in this unit throughout the Literacy and Mathematics programs. Most indicators included are modified for the students levels of abilities. Description of Activities
Daily activities: 1. Feelings and What am I Feeling Feelings videos the Transporters SensoryHouse.com Students look at Feelings Fans and choose appropriate facial expressions for how they are feeling. Students rate their anger on temperature charts Students communicate how they are feeling through AAC devices 2. Our Routine Daily songs according to the classroom visual timetable Daily movement songs according to the classroom visual timetable Explicit teaching regarding what is happening each day Rigid classroom structure, particularly in mornings 3. Roles and Responsibilities Students are encouraged to care for personal belongings. Pack bags, put away lunch boxes, clean tables and put away toys after use. Uses various cleaning utensils such as wipes and brooms to help clean the room. Helps to set up and pack away activities

Knows where items are placed in the room and what they are used for through daily activities 4. What I Like Each student identifies likes and dislikes through online image searches, books and magazines Each student creates an artwork that involves colour choice, texture and pictures Each student will have free drawing time Students will be provided with choice when choosing songs for morning routine, math routine and weekly music percussion lessons. Is given time for creative play using puppets and role play toys

Assessment
Students will be assessed through observation and listening. Each student will be assessed based on their individual levels of communication and their individual goals set out in their IEP.
