8.2 Selects and uses appropriate concrete materials for learning mathematics. In the introduction to adding fractions, our instructor gave us different shapes that represented different fractions. As an artifact to demonstrate standard 8.2, I have my drawings of the pieces we use to re-learn about fractions. I would definitely use this shapes in my future classroom so the students can see how to add fractions. I will explain how they can represent the same quantity using different shapes and the importance of having the same denominator in order to add the fractions. For example, since and 1/3 do not have the same denominators, you have to represent those fractions using the same size shapes that equal and 1/6. equals 2/6, and 1/3 equals 2/6. When you add 3 and 2 sixths you get 5/6 of the hexagon.

8.3 Uses multiple strategies, including listening to and understanding the ways students think about mathematics, to assess students mathematical knowledge. In the course of the semester, we had to create an assessment based on a Core Standard. In this assignment, I created criteria and leveled rubric as a strategy to assess the students mathematical knowledge. In the artifact I have chosen to show for this standard, I used the criteria to give feedback to the student and I used the leveled rubric to clarify how a given criteria was performed.

8.5 Participates in professional mathematics organizations and uses their print and online resources. I demonstrated this standard the time we read different publications about teaching mathematics for one of our labs. I read an article from the 2011 September issue of Teaching Children Mathematics. All the students from MT423 participated in a small discussion of the articles we read. Hopefully, when we become teachers, we participate in forums where we can share with others important information we have found in print or online, and learn from others investigation. Sharing and learning is important because it will help us find the best tools to support our students learning development.

8.6 Demonstrates knowledge of research results in the teaching and learning of mathematics. The artifact I am using to show Pedagogy Standard 8.6 is a forum where the MT243 class shared information about different magazines publications about children learning math. Thanks to this forum, I have learned that research is very important because it help us see how well different strategies work when used in the classroom, and if it is worth it trying them. For example, the article I read talked about a research study a math teacher did to see how student friendly rubric could improve their understanding of math concepts and how to communicate them. I think I would use student friendly rubrics in the future, which will allow the students self assess and see how they can improve.
