ABOUT SHELL ECO-MARATHON

Shell Eco-marathon is a unique competition that challenges students to design, build and drive the most energy-efficient car. At three events around the world hundreds of team compete to travel the furthest on the least amount of energy.

ABSTRACT
In this paper, a solar power system in Shell Eco-Marathon, which reduces the required battery cell power output by combining batteries and super capacitors in an electric vehicle, is presented. It is shown that this combination can minimize vehicle costs in terms of capital outlay and weight. The super capacitors provide instantaneous peak power as the battery cell responds to power demand over a few seconds. The batteries and fuel cell in conjunction provide extended peak power supply. The design is modeled using Proteus, and tested by simulating a likely driving scenario. The conclusion reached is that combining batteries and super capacitors in a battery cell power system could be an effective and cost-efficient means of providing power for an electric transport system.

INTRODUCTION
Due to the recent increase in worldwide gasoline prices, as well as ongoing public and governmental pressure for a more environmentally friendly and fuel efficient means of transportation, automotive manufacturers are developing product lines that incorporate true alternatives to the gas-powered drive trains that are the hallmark of the industry. And this is an Shell Eco-Marathon objective that we would like to point out in this project. Super capacitors are a genuine breakthrough in energy storage, with many possibilities for use with solar generated electricity. Powered by solar panels, super capacitors can replace batteries in many applications; or be used in super capacitor/battery hybrid systems that extend the lifetime of a battery bank. Solar Super capacitor Applications is a collection of practical, hands-on projects that explore the niche areas where super capacitors, photovoltaic and battery technology come together to produce the best results for energy efficiency, cost, reliability and longevity.
