Introduction
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the worlds largest producer of desalinated water.
Currently, there are 30 plants in operation, with total daily production of more than
three million cubic meters of desalinated water. This accounts for more than 50
percent of drinking water supply. Additional needs are estimated at six million cubic
meters per day of water capacities over the next 20 years due to rapidly growing
populations, urban development, depleted ground water resources, greater per capita
water demand, and the retirement of capacity built during the oil boom years of the
1970s and early 1980s. On the other hand, the desalination market is driven by
growing demand for water and rising marginal costs of supply. Falling costs of
desalination have dramatically increased the size of the potential market. The world
market volume has soared from $ 2.5 billion in 2002 to $ 3.8 billion in 2005 with a
growth rate of over 15% per annum (plant and equipment, not considering the whole
value chain). The market worldwide should reach nearly $ 30 billion by 2015.
Qualifying the manpower in the desalination field and enhancing the skills of existing
engineers and technicians requires better understanding of the process fundamentals,
ability to utilize various design tools, and knowledge of recent trends. This intensive
short course addresses these goals and provides decision makers, engineers and
technicians with the fundamentals and trends of the technology.
Objectives
The main objectives of this short course are stated as follows:
1- Augment and develop the skills of existing national engineers and technicians
through providing them with comprehensive theoretical and practical aspects
of the most widely used desalination processes; the necessary theoretical basis
for better understanding of different components in desalination units; better
understanding on new technologies adopted by various sectors of the
