The Study Abstract

The Internet use on Technical Procedures

at Riyadh City Libraries

The study problem lies in knowing to what

extent the Riyadh City Libraries have benefited
from the Internet abilities in the technical
procedures (Acquisition & Catalog) .
Consequently, the objective of this study is
to know the reality of using the Internet in the
technical procedures in Riyadh city libraries.
The researcher depended on the descriptive approach to study the
phenomenon of the research subject, and afterwards to use some
descriptive statistical approaches to deduct the repeated distributions and
percentages and data's diagrams which the study has come out with.
This study has come out with a set of conclusions, the most
important of which are: the presidents and employees of Acquisition and
Cataloguing departments are specialized in library science and with
experience or have certificates in the computer usage and the Internet as
well. And most libraries benefit from the Internet services in their
technical procedures. The Researcher found that the libraries have found

some benefits by using the Internet such as speed in procedures, costs

reduction, continuous updating of their information. In the meantime the
study has come out with the conclusion that the cataloguing departments
rarely use the Internet as a source for transferred cataloguing records,
moreover, it is clear that they rarely benefit from some of the available
tools on the Internet to assist with in the cataloging process. moreover,
the study has come out with the conclusion that there are some obstacles
that the libraries face when using the Internet. e.g. the library computing
system does not accept entering the Internet, and that it gives an access to
the Interest only for a few of acquisition and cataloguing employees, and
there are a few Arabic sites on it related to their works.
Finally, the study has reached a conclusion with a set of various
recommendations, the most important of which are: The libraries have to
make use of the available tools on the Internet to help them with their
technical procedures, and to hold lectures, seminars and continuous
courses for acquisition and cataloging employees on the Internet
employment in the technical procedures, and to supply libraries with
more computer sets which can have the ability to enter the Internet for
acquisition and cataloguing employees, moreover, make the Arab
libraries give the supporting Arab tools a chance to conduct the technical
procedures on the Internet.
