New Moon We dont see anything. The sunlit side is on the far side so we see the dark side.

The moon at this time is between the earth and the sun. We can consider it at zero degrees in its orbit around earth (or 360 degrees). Waxing Crescent We see a small sliver of light on the right side. The moon at this time has moved in a counter clockwise direction. It is between 0 and 90. First Quarter We see a half moon on the right. Half of the moon is lit and the other side is not. It is at a 90 in its orbit. Waxing Gibbous We see more than half a moon on the right side. It is between 90 and 179 in its orbit. Full Moon We see a fully lit circle. The earth is between the moon and the sun. The moon is at a 180 angle in its orbit. Waning Gibbous We see more than half moon on the left side. The moon has moved to the other side of the earth. The moon is at 181 to 269 angle in its orbit. Third Quarter We see a half moon on the left side. Half of the moon is lit and the other side is not. It is at a 90 angle in its orbit. Waning Crescent We see less than half of the moon on the left side. The moon is almost done in its cycle. It is between a 270 and 360 angle.
