MORTAR
IT MUST
Mortar is a mixture of Portland cement, sand and water. Used in brickwork transfers the tensile, compressive and shear stresses uniformly between adjacent bricks.
Adequate strength, but not greater that required for the design strength
Good workability
TYPE OF MORTAR
Commonly used in brickwork Prepared by hydraulic lime, sand and water Used within 4 hours 1:3 (c : s)
Commonly used in brickwork After blending with water, the mortar should be used within 2 hours 1:3 (c : s)
Combination of cement, lime, sand and some water with certain proportion
It is important for the mortar to distribute the pressure uniformly to the surface the weakest part of the masonry is the mortar, hence the less the mortar the better the performance of the wall. A thin layer of mortar is stronger compression than the thick one
