Centrioles Two tiny structures located in the cytoplasm near the nuclear envelope, separate and take up positions

on opposite sides of the nucleus.

Chromatid

When the chromosomes become visible at the beginning of cell division, each chromosome consists of two identical sister chromatids.

Centromeres Located near the middle of the chromatids.

Prophase

Metaphase

Anaphase

The chromatin condenses into chromosomes. The centrioles separate and a spindle begins to form. The nuclear membrane breaks down.

The chromosomes line up across the center of the cell.

The sister chromatids separate into individual chromosomes and are moved apart.

Interphase

Cytokinesis

Telophase

The cell grows and replicates its DNA and centrioles

The cytoplasm pinches in half. Each daughter cell has an identical set of duplicate chromosomes. Cyto Kinesis

The chromosomes gather at opposite ends of the cell and lose their distinct shape. Two new nuclear membranes form.
