Essential Questions: What do authors, poets, and artists reveal about their work through using symbolism and other figurative language? How is a person's self-awareness/self-perception shaped by the way the world around them views them? How does this impact the way they view the world? Mission: Write a personal narrative story about a moment in your life that has somehow shaped who you are. Acknowledge the change: build elements in your story that can allow the reader track your development. Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak has provided us with countless moments where Melinda's voice illustrated her emotional and intellectual development through her change in diction, figurative language, perceptive imagery, and personality. Thus, you will provide your readers with your personal growth narrative; your readers will understand the way in which you view the world due to the experiential insight you reveal. Point Breakdown: 1. At least five examples of imagery; each sense must be included (3 points each; 15 points total). -Sight-Smell-Taste-Sound-Touch2. Use illustrative figurative language at least four times (2.5 points each; 10 points total). -Simile-Metaphor-Personification-Allusion-Hyperbole3. At least ten lines of dialogue (20 points). -How are you participating in this dialogue (texting, face-to-face, phone call, etc)? -How is this developing your story (see Dialogue Handout). -Does this dialogue have a realistic and natural feel to it? 4. Organization (20 points) I. Introduction Paragraph: Includes hook, funnel, and thesis. Thesis: Articulate how this experience has changed you II. Exposition: Who, Where, When, Hint at Initial Conflicts III. Rising Action: How is the conflict developing? IV. Climax: Height of your conflict; moment of change V. Falling Action: How is the conflict resolving? Hint at change subtly. VI. Resolution/Conclusion: Insightful reflection on how this story has affected the person you are today. 5. Style/Voice (20 points) -Consider the following and how they would sound or be characterized in regards to your voice: a. Personality b. Mannerisms c. Diction & Jargon & Slang d. Honesty: Are you being true to your voice and your story? Are you being credible/reliable? e. Include Your Judgements f. Include Cultural References 6. Conventions/Spelling/Grammar (15 points) -Format: MLA, Times New Roman, 12pt., Proper Header -Spelling and Grammar: Proper sentence structure, punctuation, and polished feel (AKA proofread). -Indent Paragraphs
