Ariel Moody Observation Dates: 2/20 & 2/22 English/Language Arts

Core Standard 1: Word Recognition, Fluency and Vocabulary Development; Demonstrates awareness of sounds

Rate: 1 Responds to sounds in the environment On 2/22/13 an assistant teacher was changing Maggies diaper when the lead teacher came in the room and started talking to the other children. Maggie smiled, turned and lifted her head in the direction of the lead teacher. Next Steps: For Maggie to hear the lead teachers voice and say her name.

Core Standard 1: Word Recognition, Fluency and Vocabulary Development; Demonstrates awareness of symbols

Rate: 1 Responds to familiar pictures On 2/22/13 during extended care Maggie pointed to a picture of her lead teacher and then pointed to the lead teachers office where she was located. Maggie also pointed to a backpack that had a dinosaur on it, smiled, and made a roar noise. Next steps: For Maggie to point to the lead teachers picture and say her name and to point to the dinosaur and say dinosaur.

Core Standard 2&3: Reading Informational and Literary Text; Uses print for pleasure and information

Rate: 2 Imitates proper handling of books On 2/22/13 Maggie went to the bookshelf, selected a book and looked at the pages (the book was upside down). She then brought the book to a teacher. Maggie sat in the teacher s lap as the teacher read the book. Maggie turned the pages for the teacher as she read the book aloud. Next steps: For Maggie to pretend to read a book using sounds and hold the book right side up.

Core Standard 2&3: Reading Informational and Literary Text; Comprehends details, events and main ideas

Rate: 1 Reacts to a story or event On 2/20/13 a teacher was reading the book Row, Row, Row Your Boat and when the lines of the book read row, row, row your boat gently down the stream Maggie used her arms and pretended to row a boat. During other parts of the book Maggie listened and looked at the book. Next steps: For Maggie to point to objects in books and identify them by name and/or sound.

Core Standard 4&5: Writing Informational and Literary Text; Writing for a specific purpose and audience

Rate: 1 Intentionally makes marks or scribbles On 2/22/13 Maggie used a marker and drew on a piece a paper. She selected a marker and piece of paper and used back and forth motions to make marks on her paper. Next steps: For Maggie to communicate the meaning of her drawings.

Core Standard 6: English Language Conventions; Uses writing implements

Rate: 1 Grasps writing tools On 2/22/13 when Maggie was at the art table she used markers to draw on a piece of paper. Maggie used her whole hand to hold the marker. First she held the marker with her right hand and made marks on the paper. Then she switched hands and made marks on the paper using her left hand. Next steps: For Maggie to imitate drawing horizontal and vertical lines, and imitate drawing circles.

Core Standard 7: Listening and Speaking; Demonstrates Receptive Language

Rate: 2 Responds to familiar gestures and words On 2/22/13 Maggie went around a corner in the classroom, a teacher called her name, and she came around the corner smiling at the teacher who had called her name. While looking at the pictures on the wall a teacher asked Maggie wheres Miss Davidson and Maggie pointed to her picture on the wall. Also, when a teacher was leaving the classroom, another teacher asked Maggie to say bye and wave and Maggie did so. Next steps: For Maggie to wave bye or hello when some leaves/enters the room without being prompted.

Core Standard 7: Listening and Speaking; Demonstrates Expressive Language

Rate: 1 Uses gestures or sounds to communicate On 2/20/13 during snack a teacher asked Maggie if she was finished and she shook her head no. After Maggie ate another serving of snack a teacher asked again if she was finished and she shook her head yes, stood up, and took her bowl to the dump bucket. Next steps: For Maggie to use words to express herself, such as yes or no.
