    Fresh, clean water in many places is a priceless rarity. Deserts can have their own form of extraordinary beauty. On the other hand, deforestation, land clearing, over-harvesting & pollution reduce biodiversity, all of which lead to various forms of desertification, of both land & ocean, often contributing to global warming. There is a threshold of destruction beyond which there is no return. This poem uses a 5-7-5 syllable per line structure, in keeping with the commonly used format for haiku.

    A TRAVELLERS TALE

    Swirling desert sands Drifting, reshaping, timeless Parched earth, once forest Windswept elegance A static seascape of sand ~ Until the next storm Dry, waterless dunes Delicate, beautiful, stark Travellers nightmare Illusions shimmer Dancing, dancing, ghostly haze Promising water An empty promise Leading the traveller on Desperate struggle Memories linger Of a sacred, verdant place A gift from the earth Gentle breezes sigh Shadows play with the sunlight Water reflects sky A cup held to lips Generosity profound Dying thirst is quenched
