y Instructional Objective Students will be able to reread their chosen free-write and poems, pulling out ordinary words and phrases from that have potential to become extraordinary, poetic language Common Core Standards CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.3b Use dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings to develop experiences and events or show the response of characters to situations. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.5 With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing. (Editing for conventions should demonstrate command of Language standards 1-3 up to and including grade 3 here.) Materials Chart Poets Say Things in Extraordinary Ways Anticipatory Set Connection Yesterday we began writing our poetry. Today, we will make our words extraordinary! Procedure TO: I am going to read you my poem so far. Model, demonstrating changing one word/phrase for another and adding it to the chart WITH: Add another word to the ordinary chart. Turn and Talk: How can I make this extraordinary? BY: Students replicate chart in their notebook, and begin working with their own poems Share out early during active engagement: Can anyone give us an example from your own poem? The class can help you come up with a poetic replacement. Closure Share out: What are some ordinary words or phrases that you have now made extraordinary? Assessment Discussions and teacher conferences: Were students able to replace average words with poetic words or phrases?
