AIM Developing a Vivaldi antenna optimized in the WIPL-D environment for exhibiting
identical E and H plane radiation pattern over an octave band starting from 250 MHz to 500 MHz.
ABSTRACT
In modern communication systems, such as those for satellite links and mobile communications, and for emerging applications, such as wireless local area networks often require compact antennas at low cost. The antennas are also used in radio telescopes which are extensively used in space research programs. Raman Research Institute (RRI) is planning to build such a radio telescope. This project focuses on building a new radio telescope to be fitted with a Vivaldi antenna. Vivaldi antenna generally known as a tapered slot antenna exhibits wide band performance over several octaves of bandwidth. The structure is simple, efficient and lightweight. More attractive feature of a Vivaldi antenna is that it produces symmetrical end-fire beam with a reasonable gain and low side lobes. The suitability of the Vivaldi antenna for enhancing the potential of the cylindrical antenna will be investigated by simulating it using an electromagnetic software tool (WIPL-D). We aim in this project, at developing a Vivaldi antenna optimized in the WIPL-D environment for exhibiting identical E and H plane radiation pattern over an octave band starting from 250 MHz to 500 MHz.
