Atom History Timeline Assignment

Sciences discovery and description of the atom did not occur over the last year, or the last decade, or even the last millennium! It has taken thousands of years of wonder and study about matter for science to arrive at what it believes is the true picture of the smallest building block of elements. Instead of learning about every individual contribution to todays concept of the atom, some major players will be investigated here, along with their important contributions to atomic study. Directions: Using the Internet, construct a time line that outlines the history of the development of people's understanding of the structure of the atom. a) Section 1 - Scientist Images: Find out the images and place these scientists on the timeline at the years corresponding to their work on researching the atom. b) Section 2 - Model Images: Once the scientists have been placed on the time line, identify the atom model that resulted from their research for each of the bold scientists. Place the image of the model on the time line under the corresponding scientist. i) List the parts of the atom (nucleus, protons, neutrons, electrons) that were known under each model that was placed on the timeline. c) Section 3 Theory or Experiment: Find and match the corresponding theory or experiment to the correct scientists who developed it. These theories or experiments increased the understanding of the structure of the atom. Further details concerning these theories/experiments will be discussed in class.
