Preparation

Passes tube 10. Lubricates distal tip of the tube 11. Alerts the patient 12. Gently inserts the tube through the most patent nostril 13. Advances tube parallel to nasal floor until it reaches the posterior nasopharynx 14. Flexes head when tube reaches posterior nasopharynx 15. Encourages patient to swallow 16. Advances tube until determined distance mark has been reached 17. Does not force tube Verifies proper tube placement 18. Injects 10-20 ml air into tube with catheter tip syringe 19. Auscultates borborygmus over epigastrium 20. Visualizes descent of tube below diaphragm on chest radiograph 21. Aspirates gastric contents (acidic pH will colour blue litmus paper red) 22. Secures nasogastric tube 23. Connects tube to drainage bag (simpla bag)
