American photographer and
environmentalist, best known
for his black-and-white
photographs of the American
West and primarily Yosemite
National Park.

Review Geography
• Deserts: a very dry, often sandy area with little or no
plant growth.
• Mountains: land mass with great height and steep
sides that is higher than a hill.
• Valleys: a long area of relatively low elevation, often
having a stream bed at the bottom, surrounded by
mountains or hills.
• Hills: an elevated area of land, smaller than a
mountain.
• coastal areas
• Oceans: the vast expanse of salt water covering
approximately three quarters of the earth's surface.
• Lakes: a large, standing body of fresh or salt water
that is surrounded on all sides by land.
Diamante Poem
• A Diamante Poem follows a very specific format –
there are seven lines, and each line must have a
specific number and type of words. When you're
finished, the poem will be in the shape of a diamond!
Look at the format and example below, and then try
writing your own diamante poem.

• Line 1= Topic (noun)


Line 2 = Two describing words (adjectives)
Line 3 = Three action words (-ing verbs)
Line 4 = Fourwords: Two words about the topic and
two words that are opposite
of those in line 2
Line 5 = Three action words for the ending noun (-ing
verbs)
Line 6 = Two words to describe ending noun
(adjectives)
Sample Diamante Poem
Here is an example of a diamante
poem about a meteor shower:

Fireball

Brilliant, beautiful
2 Adjectives
Flashing, shining, dashing
3 Verbs
Bright, wondrous, black, nothing 4

What to Do
• First, analyze your photograph.
• Do you notice any geographic features?
• Create a rough draft of your Diamante Poem
using the worksheet about the photograph.
• Make sure to include a geography word
• When finished, reread your poem.
• Check for any misspelled words.
• When finished, create your final draft on the
computer.
• Print your poem.
• Glue your poem and picture on the
construction paper.
• Decorate your construction paper if there is
