ABSTRACT

3D modeling has in recent years gained popularity in all aspects of engineering. The CAD visualization of products by a design engineer, shape mapping by a graphics engineer, all involve the modeling of a 3D object. This project aims to cater these needs at a smaller level by using a development board known as Raspberry Pi.

The project consists of a man-controlled robot that scans the physical dimension of an object. The robot has movement capability which can be controlled by a remote keyboard. The hardware part consists of a servo motor, line-laser arrangement to scan the surface and a webcam on top of the arrangement to capture the scanning. The depth is measured with the help of line laser arrangement. To measure the dimensions of the full object, the laser is mounted on a servo motor. Both the motor and the laser are controlled by the Raspberry Pi. The depth is obtained from the grayscale obtained from processing a series of scanned images. The data obtained from the laser and webcam can be stored in a Memory and later be retrieved so as to model the space on a computer.
