CHAPTER 3: KINEMATIC OF RIGID BODY 1. The telephone cable reel rolls without slipping on the horizontal surface.

If point A on the cable has a velocity vA = 0.8 m/s to the right, compute the velocity of the center O and the angular velocity of the reel. (Be careful not to make the mistake of assuming that the reel rolls to the left.) Ans: vo = 1.2 m/s, = 1.333 rad/s CW

2. The hydraulic cylinder D is causing the distance OA to increase at the rate of 50 mm/s. Calculate the velocity of the pin at C in its horizontal guide for the instant when = 50o. Ans: vc = 59.6 mm/s

3. At the instant represented the triangular plate ABD has a clockwise angular velocity of 3 rad/s. For this instant determine the angular velocity BC of link BC. Ans: BC = 3 rad/s CW

4(a). For the instant represented, Crank OB has a clockwise angular velocity = 0.8 rad/s and is passing the horizontal position. Determine the corresponding velocity of the guide roller A in the 20o slot and the velocity of point C midway between A and B. 4(b). Locate the instantaneous center of zero velocity and use it to find the velocity of the guide roller A in the 20o slot and the velocity of point C midway between A and B. Ans: vA = 226 mm/s, vc = 174.7 mm/s

5. The mechanism for pushing small boxes from an assembly line onto a conveyor belt is shown with arm OD and crank CB in their vertical positions. For the configuration shown, crank CB has a constant clockwise angular velocity of rad/s. Determine the acceleration of E. Ans: E = 0.285 m/s2

CHAPTER 4: KINETIC OF RIGID BODY 1. The uniform 8 kg slender bar is hinged about a horizontal axis through O and released from rest in the horizontal position. Determine the distance b from the mass center to O which will result in an initial angular acceleration of 16 rad/s 2, and find the force R on the bar at O just after release.

2. The uniform 24 m mast has a mass of 300 kg and is hinged at its lower end to a fixed support at O. If the winch C develops a starting torque of 1300 N.m, calculate the total force supported by the pin at O as the mast begins to lift off its support at B. Also, find the corresponding angular acceleration of the mast. The cable at A is horizontal and the mass of the pulleys and winch is negligible. Ans: = 0.0709 rad/s2 , O = 5260 N

3. The figure shows the cross section AB of a garage door which is a rectangular 2.5 m by 5 m panel of uniform thickness with a mass of 200 kg. The door is supported by the struts of negligible mass and hinged at O. Two spring-and-cable assemblies, one on each side of the door, control the movement. When the door is in the horizontal open position, each spring is unextended. If the door is given a slight inbalance from the open position and allowed to fall, determine the value of the spring constant k for each spring which will limit the angular velocity of the door to 1.5 rad/s when edge B strikes the floor. Ans: k = 1.270 kN/m

4. The 10 kg double wheel with radius of gyration of 125 mm about O is connected to the spring of stiffness k = 600 N/m by a cordwhich is wrapped securely around the inner hub. If the wheel is released from rest on the incline with the spring stretched 225 mm, calculate the maximum velocity v of its center O during the ensuing motion. The wheel rolls without slipping. Ans: vmax = 1.325 m/s

5. A couple M = 12 N.m is applied at C to the spring-toggle mechanism, which is released from rest in the position = 45o. In this position the spring, which has the stiffness of 140 N/m is stretched 150 mm. Bar AB has a mass of 3 kg and BC a mass of 6 kg. Calculate the angular velocity of BC as it crosses the position = 0. Motion is in the vertical plane, and friction is negligible. Ans: = 4.15 rad/s
