Preface
There are many good textbooks that cover the theory of finite element analysis, and
several tutorials that illustrate the steps that must be followed to operate a finite
element program. However, there is a lack of material that integrates both basic
finite element modeling concepts with a tutorial epproach of learning how to operate
a finite element program. This book and the accompanying CD are aimed at filling
this void. The tutorials are presented in both written and multimedia formats to
accommodate different learning styles. The Dook is directed to using finite element
analysis to solve engineering problems. In several chapters, the finite element
tutorial probiem is compared with manual calculations so that the reader can
compare and contrast the finite element results with the manual solution,
The primary purpose of this tutorial js to introduce new users to the ANSYS@
Workbench” software, by illustrating how it can be used to solve a variety of
problems. This book and CD do not contain an in depth treatment of the theoretical
basis of finite element analysis (FEA), but instead, are aimed at the practitioner who
wishes to begin making use of the software.
Because of the “applied” sense of this baok it can be used in combination with other
textbooks, to cover the “leboretory” portion of courses that are theoretically based.
In cases where the course is application based, it can serve as the primary text. In
adcition to the step by step tutorials, introcuctory material is provided that covers
the capabilities and limitations of the different element and solution types. The
majority of topics and examples presented are oriented to stress analysis, with the
exception of natural frequency analysis (chapter 12) and heat transfer (chapter 13).
It ls expected that the reader has a background in engineering mechanics and
mechanics of materials and for chapter 13, heat transfer.
This tutorial takes the approach that the reader should always compare their FEA
results with other data; obtained from either manual calculations or experimental
test data. Most of the examples and some of the exercises make reference to
existing analytical solutions, The authors feel that only through this process will new
users be able to begin understanding how good finite element models are built.
Finite element analysis has become a widely accepted powerful tool in both today’s
engineering offices as well as being taught in most engineering related programs.
The ANSYS Workbench software discussed in this tutorial represents a powerful tool
that can be used to solve many types of engineering problems. However, without
appropriate training on how to use this powerful software, its benefits cannot be fully
realized, It is the goal of this tutorial to provide both written and multimedia
material that will assist users of this software to begin learning some of its
capabilities,
