Where do I start?
It usually takes more than 3 weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.
-Mark Twain10-1 ratio For every one hour of delivery expect to spend 10 hours in preparation. The way you spend preparing is more important than the actual number of hours you spend.

Speakers are like athletes: Time spent planning and practicing is an investment that produces winning results.

Analyzing Yourself
What is your Goal?
Are you interested in reaching one person or an entire audience? What do you want them to hear and remember about your presentation and how do you know if you have been successful?

Know Your Knowledge!

Its best to speak on a topic or subject you know best. Even if you are comfortable do not sell yourself short and think you know enough. It is better to over prepare than to not have an answer.

Consider your Feelings!

When you are excited about a topic, your delivery improves. Your voice becomes more expressive and your movements more natural.

Knowing the Occasion

Knowing where you will be and what your surroundings are like are key to giving an effective presentation.
Understanding the occasion and what people are expecting to hear from you are necessary when planning your presentation. You should know the reason for the meeting and what material you will need to prepare. If you are planning on incorporating another speaker or person to present you should work with them to make sure they understand what you are expecting them to deliver. This will ensure that your points comes across as cohesive and well planned. Having someone ill prepared reflects back on you directly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8rXHnqM87Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDJSVPAx8xc Powerpoint Templates

The Importance of Adaptation

Whether you are given weeks in advance to prepare for the given circumstances or just hours or even minutes before you should be comfortable and have the conviction to gracefully get your message across and absorbed by your audience.
It is important to share experiences, connect with your audience on a deeper level so that they fully take in what your message is. Sharing lessons learned whether good or bad helps make you seen human and relatable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCrx_u3825g&feat ure=fvwrel Powerpoint Templates

Formula for a Specific Goal

Whom you want to influence + what you want them to think or do + how + when + where you want them to do it = the answer to your goal. I want (whom) to (do what)(how, when, where). Powerpoint Templates

Page 316-317

Methods for defining a Thesis Statement

1. Imagine that you met a member of your audience at the elevator and had only a few seconds to explain what your idea was before the door closed? 2. What if you could only send 2-3 sentences in an email communicating your main ideas? 3. If your listeners heard only a small portion of your remarks, what is the minimum they should have learned?

By practicing these methods you should clearly recognize your thesis and how you can clearly get it across in a way that will be retained by your audience. Being memorable is key!
