Getting Started

The following topics describes the operations that ensure a smooth, trouble-free launch of the Web LCT. Configuration Requirements The hardware and software configuration requirements for the Web LCT system are described. The Web LCT system can be installed on Windows. Connecting the Web LCT to NEs To configure and manage NEs by using the Web LCT, you need to connect the Web LCT to the NEs with Ethernet cables or serial port cables. Starting the Web LCT Server After starting the computer where the Web LCT is installed, you must start the Web LCT server application for network management. Logging In to the Web LCT To manage and configure NEs in the Web LCT graphical user interface, you need to log in to the Web LCT first. Shutting Down the Web LCT You can shut down the Web LCT. Web LCT Main Window The Web LCT main user interfaces and the operations that you can perform on these user interfaces are described. Selecting an Object in the Navigation Tree In the Web LCT, the configuration and management of services are performed on operation objects. Before you configure and manage services, you need to select an object in the Navigation Tree. Setting Parameters in the List On the Web LCT user interface, the Object Tree is displayed on the left and the parameter list is displayed on the right. All the parameters are set in the list. To perform operations in the NE Explorer, follow the procedure. Setting the Display Format of Web LCT Time The Web LCT provides different time display formats to meet requirements of users on time display format in different regions. Operation Precautions The operation precautions for ensuring correct operations are as follows. List of Operations That Might Affect Network Running and Monitoring Performing the operations listed below on the Web LCT might affect the running or monitoring of the network. Confirm an operation prior to performing it.

Configuration Requirements

The hardware and software configuration requirements for the Web LCT system are described. The Web LCT system can be installed on Windows. Hardware requirements: CPU: Pentium III 700 MHz or higher RAM: 256 MB (recommended 512 MB or higher) Monitor: 1024 x 768 resolution Serial port: RS 232 Ethernet interface: 10/100 Mbit/s Software requirements: The Web LCT supports the following operating systems: Windows 2000 Professional (Service Pack 4) Windows 2000 Server (Service Pack 4) Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2) Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (Service Pack 1) Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (Service Pack 2) Browser requirement: Internet Explorer 6.0 Parent topic: Getting Started

Procedure

Connecting the Web LCT to NEs

To configure and manage NEs by using the Web LCT, you need to connect the Web LCT to the NEs with Ethernet cables or serial port cables.

Connect the Web LCT to the NEs with Ethernet cables. 1. 2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Web LCT computer. Route the cable to the equipment side and connect the RJ-45 connector of the Ethernet cable to the NMS interface of the equipment panel.

Connect through the DCN. 1. 2. Connect the Web LCT computer to the DCN using an Ethernet cable. Connect one end of another Ethernet cable to the NMS interface of the equipment panel and connect the other end of the line to the DCN.

Connect the Web LCT to the NEs with the RS 232 serial port cable. 1. 2. Connect the serial port cable to the Web LCT computer. Route the cable to the equipment side and connect the RS 232 connector of the serial port cable to the RS 232 interface of the equipment panel. NOTE: For the location of the RS 232 serial interface and Ethernet interface on the equipment, see the equipment-specific Hardware Description. Parent topic: Getting Started

Prerequisite

Starting the Web LCT Server

After starting the computer where the Web LCT is installed, you must start the Web LCT server application for network management.

The Web LCT computer and equipment must be correctly connected.

Procedure
1. Start the Web LCT computer. 2. Double-click the shortcut icon "Start Web LCT" on the desktop. The Web LCT is properly started. 3. Enter the User Name and Password. NOTE: By default, the initial user name is admin, and the password is T2000. To protect the Web LCT from illegal logins, you need to instantly change this password and keep the new one. 4. Prerequisites

Logging In to the Web LCT

To manage and configure NEs in the Web LCT graphical user interface, you need to log in to the Web LCT first.

The Web LCT server must be started correctly. The pop-up blocker of Internet Explorer must be turned off.

Procedure
1. Open the Internet Explorer. 2. Enter the IP address of the Web LCT server in the address field. The Web LCT Login dialog box is displayed. NOTE: Enter the IP address of the server, for example, http://10.70.73.1:8080/WebLCT. The four octets 10.70.73.1 is the IP address of the server computer and 8080 is the port number. 3. Enter the password. NOTE: By default, the user name of the Web LCT is admin, and the initial password is T2000. To protect the Web LCT from illegal logins, you need to constantly change the password. 4. Click Login. The NE List is displayed. Parent topic: Getting Started

Prerequisite

Shutting Down the Web LCT

You can shut down the Web LCT.

You must be logged in to the Web LCT.

Procedure
1. Click 2. Click to close the opened NE Explorer. to close the Web LCT.

Web LCT Main Window

The Web LCT main user interfaces and the operations that you can perform on these user interfaces are described. NE List NE List is the main user interface of the Web LCT. The Web LCT manages NEs in the NE List. In this user interface, you can create or delete NEs. You can also log in to an NE, log out of an NE, view the system log, and set the time format. NE Explorer NE Explorer is the main operation user interface of the Web LCT. It regards one NE as an object. In

this user interface, you can configure, manage and maintain the NEs in different levels such as on a per-NE basis, on a per-board basis or on a per-port basis. It is the primary user interface for NE commissioning and configuration on the Web LCT. The NE Explorer provides the Function Tree for operation navigation. You can select an object on which you want to perform the operation, choose the corresponding function item from the Function Tree, and then the configuration user interface of the function is displayed. NE Panel The NE Panel displays subracks and boards in different colors depending on their current status. In the Web LCT, most operations such as equipment configuration, monitoring, and maintenance are performed in the NE Panel window. Operation Object Status The meaning of legends on a view is described. 7.1. NE List
NE List is the main user interface of the Web LCT. The Web LCT manages NEs in the NE List. In this user interface, you can create or delete NEs. You can also log in to an NE, log out of an NE, view the system log, and set the time format. NOTE: NE List support periodically refreshing. The NE information is automatically refreshed every five seconds. The Web LCT provides the focus display function. After the mouse cursor resides on a shortcut button for about two seconds, the description of the shortcut button is displayed. After the Web LCT client is successfully started, the NE List window is displayed.

7.2. NE Explorer
NE Explorer is the main operation user interface of the Web LCT. It regards one NE as an object. In this user interface, you can configure, manage and maintain the NEs in different levels such as on a per-NE basis, on a per-board basis or on a per-port basis. It is the primary user interface for NE commissioning and configuration on the Web LCT. The NE Explorer provides the Function Tree for operation navigation. You can select an object on which you want to perform the operation, choose the corresponding function item from the Function Tree, and then the configuration user interface of the function is displayed.

Navigation Path
In the NE List, select an NE and click NE Explorer , or double-click the NE. The NE Explorer is displayed. The NG WDM NE Explorer is shown in Figure 1. Figure 1 NG WDM NE Explorer

7.3. NE Panel
The NE Panel displays subracks and boards in different colors depending on their current status. In the Web LCT, most operations such as equipment configuration, monitoring, and maintenance are performed in the NE Panel window.

GUI
Select an NE in the NE List and click NE Explorer, the NE Explorer is displayed. By default, the pane to the right displays the NE Panel, which is associated with the equipment. Figure 1 shows the NE Panel of the OptiX OSN 6800. Figure 2 shows the NE Panel of the RTN 620.

NOTE: By default, slot layout is displayed in the NE Explorer and cannot be closed. To add a new board, right-click an idle slot, and choose a board type. To select an operation related to an installed board, right-click the installed board and choose the corresponding item from the shortcut menu. For example, right-click an installed board and choose Path View to display the detailed path information. Figure 3 shows the NG WDM channel diagram. Figure 4 shows the RTN equipment channel diagram.

7.4. Operation Object Status


The meaning of legends on a view is described.

Working Status
The working status of operation objects (such as NE) is shown in different colors. The default colors and the status related listed in Table 1.

Table 1 Working Status Color Red Description Critical alarm indicates the current highest severity alarm of the operation object is critical. Major alarm indicates the current highest severity alarm of the operation object is major. Minor alarm indicates the current highest severity alarm of the operation object is minor. Warning alarm indicates the current highest severity alarm of the operation object is warning. Normal state. Abnormal event state. Unknown state.

7.5. Frequently Used Buttons


The frequently used buttons on the Web LCT GUI are as follows:

7.6. Table Operations


The shortcut operations on tables in the Web LCT user interface are described.

Table Sorting
You can sort the items in a table according to a certain order and quickly locate the type of information you want to view. In the Web LCT user interface, if the name of a field is underlined, it indicates that the table items can be sorted by this field. Click a column heading and the table items are sorted based on the values in this column. If you click the column again, the table items are sorted in the reversed order based on the values in the column. The field that is regarded as the keyword of the sorting is remarked with or . Figure 1 is a table that is sorted by NE ID. Figure 1 Table sorting

Multiselection in Table
Press Shift and click the start and end rows, and the several consecutive rows in the table are selected at the same time. Click Ctrl and click several rows, and the several inconsecutive rows in a table are selected at the same time.

Paging Display
In the Web LCT user interface, some tables can be displayed in different pages. The data in each table can be displayed in several pages according to the number of rows in each page that you set. In this way, tables do not look too large. The tables that support paging display include tables of alarm browsing and log browsing.Figure 2 describes how to use the paging display function. Selecting an Object in the Navigation Tree

In the Web LCT, the configuration and management of services are performed on operation objects. Before you configure and manage services, you need to select an object in the Navigation Tree.

Prerequisite
The NE Explorer must be displayed.

Procedure
1. In the Navigation Tree of the NE Explorer, select an NE or a board. The functions that the object supports are displayed in the Function Tree, which is in the lower pane of the NE Explorer. 2. Select a desired function. To expand the contained subdirectory, click to the left of an icon. In the right-hand pane of the NE Explorer, the configuration user interface of this function is displayed. Parent topic: Getting Started

Setting Parameters in the List

On the Web LCT user interface, the Object Tree is displayed on the left and the parameter list is displayed on the right. All the parameters are set in the list. To perform operations in the NE Explorer, follow the procedure.

Prerequisite
The window specific to a function must be displayed.

Context
NOTE: If an item in the list is grayed out, it cannot be edited. If the value of an item in the list is in yellow green color, the value of this item is modified but not applied. If the value of an item in the list is "/", the value of this item is unknown. If the value of an item in the list is "-", this operation object does not support this item.

Procedure
1. Double-click a column and the drop-down list or the text box is displayed.

2. Select a proper item from the drop-down list or enter a desired value in the text box.

3. Click Apply.

Setting the Display Format of Web LCT Time

The Web LCT provides different time display formats to meet requirements of users on time display format in different regions.

1. Click

in the NE list. The Time Format Setting dialog box is displayed.

Operation Precautions

The operation precautions for ensuring correct operations are as follows. Avoid modifying the IP address of the Web LCT server computer. When a hazardous operation is performed, the Web LCT asks for confirmation. The Web LCT Online Help must be installed in the English file path. Otherwise, it cannot run properly.
