FOR CHEMISTRY

THE PROJECT WORK

Objective of the project work is to enable candidates to acquire knowledge and skills in chemistry using information and communications technology as well as to develop soft skills

The soft skills are as follows: (a) communication, (b) teamwork, (c) critical thinking and problem solving, (d) flexibility/adaptability, (e) leadership, (f) organising, (g) information communications and technology, (h) moral and ethics.

Summary of Project Work

Throughout First, Second and Third Term TOPIC PURPOSE

PROJECT

Volumetric analysis/ physical quantity/ technique

To enable students to acquire knowledge and skills in chemistry using ICT as well as to develop softskill.

The THEME Of Project Work For the Year 2012/13 is

ANALYSIS OF CONTAMINANTS / ADDITIVES IN CONSUMER PRODUCTS

SUGGESTED CONSUMER PRODUCTS

SOFT DRINKS COLOURED AND FLAVOURED FOOD (Cakes, desserts, jelly, sweet . ect.) SAUCES / JAMS FRUIT JUICE PICKLED AND DRIED FRUITS canned food Milk Any other consumer products

SUGGESTED TOPICS
FOOD DYE IN COLOURED FOOD NITRITE IN CANNED FOOD VITAMIN C (ASCORBIC ACID) IN FRUIT JUICE BENZOIC ACID IN FOOD OTHER POSSIBLE CONTAMINANTS/ ADDITIVES IN CONSUMER PRODUCTS .

SUGGESTED METHODS OF ANALYSIS

CHROMATOGRAPHY VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS pH SOLVENT EXTRACTION DISTILLATION QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS

PROCEDURE
Students are divided into groups of 3 or 4 and headed by a leader. The group identify a research topic that is relevant to the theme. Students should set research objectives, working plan and techniques to be carried out. They are encourage to use available apparatus and instruments. Student should consult and obtained approval from their teacher before carrying out the research. Students should keep a log book of their research activities and document all observations, data analysis and result.

PROCEDURE
In carrying out their research, students are also encouraged to gather, process and present information to describe and explain evidence for the need to monitor levels of contaminants/ additives in consumer products. Information gathered can be from interview, survey and official sources. Students should state the conclusions and references used. Students should prepare a well structured, clear, concise and precise research report.
