Classroom Management Plan Created for 3rd Grade Student Teaching Placement Expectations: These expectations were compiled

as a class and serve as our Class Constitution. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Always follow directions from the teacher the first time. Respect others and property. Enjoy others and have fun! Always try your best! Be honest!

Rewards: When the above expectations are exceeded and noted by the teacher, students will receive a coin to put in their respective pouches. Each student has his or her own pouch in which to keep pirates coins. Coins can be earned by the whole class or by individual students for things such as walking quietly in the hallways, receiving a compliment from the cafeteria staff, helping a classmate, doing an exemplary job listening for the day, etc. These coins can be turned in on Fridays for reward coupons. The reward coupons will give students special privileges such as sitting in the teachers chair, wearing slippers in the classroom, picking the music for class work time, etc. Consequences: Violation of the expectations will result in one or multiple consequences. The severity of the consequence will be up to the discretion of the teacher but the basic progression of discipline is: 1. Warning if appropriate, student will be asked to re-do what they did wrong in an appropriate manner 2. Give me 10 lose 10 minutes of recess time 3. Have a talk with the teacher and spend recess completing a blue sheet. The student will explain what he or she did wrong, why he or she did it, and what an appropriate action would be for next time on the blue sheet. The blue sheet will be brought home and be signed by the parent or guardian. Reminders: Students who misbehave during lessons will be given subtle reminders. Proximity and quiet reminders will be used. At times the teacher may simply tell a student who misbehaves that they will need to see them at the end of the lesson. Good behaviors will be noticed as well. When students model appropriate behavior, the teacher may publicly compliment the student on his or her behavior to focus

on the positives and resist giving attention to the student with negative behavior. This strategy will be used especially for those who misbehave in order to receive attention. Schedule: 8:30 Student Arrival Students arrive, hang up their backpacks, sign in by hanging their star under their lunch choice, turn any notes into the blue NOTES container, read the morning message on the Promethean Board and follow the directions, and turn any work into the INBOX. 8:45 School News 8:50 9:00 Complete morning work and go over it as a class. Make sure students have necessary materials to go to math class. 9:05 10:00 Math Homeroom students pass out math textbooks. Students from other homerooms arrive for math and set their homework on the top of their desks. Students complete a math warm-up as the teacher goes around to check homework. Timed tests are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students attention is achieved and the math lesson is started. Students are given their homework for the night and they record the assignment in their planners. Students who forget their homework need to bring it the following day or else they owe recess. 10:00 10:30 Spelling/Word Work Students work on their spelling unit for the week in their spelling books. The whole class works on a word sort on the Promethean Board each Monday and mini lessons are given to explain how to complete the tasks on the following pages. Spelling tests are given each Friday. 10:30 11:00 Recess/Snack Students are called to grab their snack and line up quietly for recess. 11:00 12:00 Guided Reading Groups Students are called to work with the teacher in guided reading groups during this hour. The students who are not being met with are working independently at their desks on specified tasks. These tasks are written up on the Promethean Board. 12:00 12:45 Writers Workshop Mini-lessons are taught at this time or students are working on previous writing assignments. Individual conferences may be taking place. 12:45 1:15 Lunch 1:15 1:30 Write/Check Planners Students write in their planners at this time. The teacher will go around to see if there are any notes for them in the home-school communication box. 1:30 2:10 Special/Social Studies/Science

Procedures/Routines: When students arrive in the morning: - Hang up backpack - Hand any notes or homework into the blue NOTES container - Check in by putting individual star on lunch count chart - Take down chair and start working on morning work that is placed on chair Class Work/Homework: - Students are held responsible for completing their class work and their homework. Any completed papers will be placed in the Inbox. If work is not completed, students will stay in from recess to catch up. Work that has been checked over by the teacher will be placed in the Outbox. Student helpers will assist the teacher in passing out these papers in the morning. Lunch Count: - Students will place their star on the appropriate lunch choice for the day and the student whose job is lunch count for the week will fill out the orange lunch count card and walk it down to the office secretary. Transitions: - A five minute warning will be given by the teacher. Teachers attention signal: - Clap a pattern and students repeat the pattern - All eyes on me please! - One, two, three, eyes on me, One, two, eyes on you! - If you can hear me put a hand on your head. If you can hear me clap twice - Macaroni and cheese!, Everybody freeze! Going to the restroom: - Students put a fist in the air and slightly shake it (sign language for bathroom) and the teacher will grant permission. Getting into groups: - At times, the teacher will randomly hand out animal cards to students and students with a common animal are grouped together.

Sometimes the teacher will draw students from the pile of index cards they decorated to form partnerships in the classroom. - At other times, the teacher will preselect groups to avoid unproductively or misbehavior. Independent work: - Students are expected to be quiet during independent work time unless told otherwise by the teacher. - Students must be working on something and not wandering around the room. Reading books found in the classroom: - Students are welcome to choose a book to read from the book rack, inquiry table or baskets but are expected to return to the book to the same place it was found. Lining up to leave the room: - Students will be called by row to line up at the door. Snack: - Students will be given a snack time during the morning. For those who forget to bring one, the teacher will provide them with goldfish or pretzels. Asking questions: - Students must raise their hand to get the attention of the teacher during a lesson. They are expected to not call out. Taking tests in the classroom: - Students will take out their own offices/blinders and put them on their desks. They should be silent during the entirety of the test and must raise their hand in order to get the teachers attention. Early finishers: - Students who complete work early will need to check with the teacher for quality and completeness. Depending upon the activity, they may be given a related enrichment task to further their knowledge. They will then choose a book to read or finish any work they may have in their work folder. Preparing for dismissal: - Students will tidy their desks, put their agendas and any papers needing to be brought home into their backpack and place their chair up on their desk.

Behavioral Contract: If behavior persists, the teacher will sit down with the student and come up with individual expectations and consequences that suit the student. A contract with the form of If I (positive action ) , I will receive (reward that is motivating for the student) will be created and signed by the teacher and student.

Blue Think Sheet: If a students behavior warrants a reflection of the behavior, the student will be required to fill out a Blue Think Sheet. The student will fill out the attached form and bring it back with a parent signature.

Reflection: Throughout the course of my placement, I made observations of what worked and what didnt work. The students absolutely loved earning coins and jewels for good behavior and turning their pirates booty in for special reward coupons. Along with this reward system, I found that students behaved much better when I said I would watch the behavior of a couple mystery students and determine if they earned a coin or jewel. Any mention of mystery students in the hallways yielded appropriate student behavior. In the classroom, I noticed that students would call out and attempt to attract attention to themselves if they were bored. This told me to work harder to engage all students in the classroom and provide activities that will interest each student. The management plan needed to be individualized for some students. A full blown behavior contract was not necessary but individual discussions had taken place. I found that clear expectations and consequences were needed for all, but especially for some. One boy needed reminders that he would need to stay in for recess if he didnt complete his morning work. I found that he was much more productive and focused when reminders were given. From observing an experienced substitute teacher in the classroom, I learned a few effective management techniques. Students attention and respect can be commanded without raising the teacher raising their voice. Raising your voice is like admitting defeat. By raising your voice, you are basically giving the students the message that they have won. When getting students cleaned up and back to their seats quickly, counting down from ten tends to be a very effective method. I also learned that publically praising individual students for positive behavior encourages others to behave in a similar way. Time management on assignments can be difficult for students. The use of an online timer was very effective in teaching the students to manage their time. Using an online timer from www.online-stopwatch.com for assignments yielded much more productivity in the classroom.
