D C B D (* To begin with, please check that there is no error in the diagram in your workbook. The contact should be closed to begin with) Brass expands or contracts more than iron when heated or cooled. After sometime, the contact should break. To achieve this, the bimetallic strip has to curve upwards. The upper brass strip becomes shorter. So, I deduce that the bimetallic strip thermostat is used to keep the temperature cold(like in a refrigerator). Map it Out Effects crack Solutions Expansion gaps

Paya Lebar Methodist Girls School (Secondary) Sec 2 Express Physics 1. 2. A The heat from the hot water causes the round-bottomed flask to expand slightly, causing the water level to fall. The water in the flask then expands as it is heated, causing the water level to rise. 3(a) Turn the flame burners on to generate more hot air to fill the balloon and throw the sand bags out. The overall density of the balloon is now less than the air outside due to expansion of the hot air. The balloon will go higher. 3(b) Let the air out of the balloon. Once its volume decreases, its density will increase. Hence, it will sink. Turn off the flame burners. Get It Right (pg 120) (a) (* Again, check that the diagram printed in your workbook is error free. To begin with, the contacts must be closed.) When the switch is turned on, current flows through the circuit and light up the bulb. At the same time, current also heats up the bimetallic strip. The bimetallic strip expands and bends upwards, away from the contact. The circuit is opened and the bulb goes off. There is no current flow, hence the bimetallic strip is cooled down. The bimetallic strip returns to its contact and closes the circuit again. Hence, the bulb lights up again. (b) To heat up the bimetallic strip more quickly than the rate when the current is passed through the strip itself. (c) Metal Y. In the bimetallic strips, the metal with the higher expansion rate expands faster, hence pushes the other metal, which expands slower. END
