Abstract: Over the past two decades diabetes has evolved into a global epidemic that is currently threatening the
economies of all nations. The United States alone spends approximately $250 billion per year on diabetes management.
Nearly 25% of American adolescents are now classified as either diabetic or pre-diabetic. Disturbingly, standard medical
interventions intended to curb the disease have not proven effective in this age group. The New England Journal of
Medicine now predicts that the latest generation of American youth may be the first generation in U.S. history not to live
longer than the generation that preceded it due to complications associated with both obesity and diabetes. If we are
genuinely interested in suppressing the epidemic of diabetes then we must identify simple solutions that measurably reduce
risks associated with the development of the disease while simultaneously reducing health care costs and environmental
burdens. The routine consumption of electrolyzed reduced water has demonstrated increased insulin sensitivity, stabilized
serum glucose levels, reductions in LDL cholesterol, inflammation reduction, weight loss, and in some cases complete
reversal of metabolic syndrome. The topical applications of electrolyzed oxidizing water and electrolytic sodium hypochlorite
have demonstrated improved wound outcomes and a reduced need for antibiotics and surgical interventions among diabetic
patients. Electrochemically activated solutions are time tested and clinically proven tools that deserve serious consideration
as cost effective countermeasures against the growing epidemic of diabetes and its complications.

Key Words: diabetes, type 1, type 2, pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hydrogen rich water, electrolyzed reduced water,
electrolyzed oxidizing water, electrolytic sodium hypochlorite, hypochlorous acid
