Remission Rocks honors first-time breast cancer survivor

Remission Rocks returned to Jacksonville for its second annual benefit concert. Bosom Buddies founder Bobbi de Cordova-Hanks, honored Debbie Cooper, a mother of two diagnosed with stage two breast cancer in January. Hanks acknowledged Coopers perseverance throughout her treatment. Cooper recently finished chemotherapy. Despite losing her hair, she gained a new sense of life and a few stylish wigs. While some view breast cancer as an evil disease, she views it as an empowering force between men and women.

She is a director of marketing and admissions at Pam Gardener of Jacksonville and speech therapist. She credits her co-workers for encouraging her to beat the cancer and allowing her to work full-time during her treatments. Cooper admits she is the one out of eight people to have breast cancer in many of her social circles. Finding out I had breast cancer was life altering, she said. I was a diver so it made me dig deep. Once you lose your hair all bets are off. I became a more positive person. Cooper discovered her inner strength while battling the deadly cancer. Before her diagnosis she considered herself an introvert and hated the color pink. Now Cooper delights in pouncing around in various shades of the hue. She said the cancer brought she and her family and friends closer. Cooper is even looking forward to celebrating her 50th birthday. I have a new outlook and focus on life, Cooper said. Her younger sisters, Kimberly Cooper York and Kristi Cooper-Johnson, agree their sister is no longer afraid to live. They continue to uplift their older sister as she grows her hair back and passes around her positive energy. One of the many highlights came toward the end of the concert. No Known Cure, made up of doctors Chris Rathburn and William Gorospe, played The Beatles Let It Be as Cooper and former breast cancer survivors lined the stage to sing in unison. Cooper is thankful for the recognition but said the concert was not only about her. She wants other women to know life exists before, during and after breast cancer. The concert, which is sponsored by numerous community groups and businesses including the Life

The concert, which is sponsored by numerous community groups and businesses including the Life Center of America, raises money for breast cancer survivors and patients. All proceeds went to Bosom Buddies, a local nonprofit breast cancer support group. Breast cancer survivors and patients, along with their friends and family. Last years concert attracted 350 people and raised $8,000. The event was held at River City Brewing Company for the second year. The years concert sold more than 400 tickets. The amount of money raised has yet to be calculated. Sponsors included the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation. The foundation donated $8,000 last year to Bosom Buddies.
