Worth Valley Primary School lies on the edge of Keighley, near the cities of Bradford
and Leeds. The area is full of industrial history but is also home to the Bronte Family, famous
authors, who lived in nearby Haworth. Around the town is beautiful countryside, mainly given
to sheep farming. The Yorkshire Dales is a National Park area, full of rugged hills, farms, small
traditional villages and many rivers.
The school works hard at giving its learners a full education, not only teaching
Numeracy, Literacy, Science and many other subjects, but also encouraging healthy living,
cycling and many trips out to the local area.
Part of our extended teaching includes this Comenius project, which has given the
school a European dimension. The children have learned about the countries and towns of our
new friends in Wemmel, Sturovo and Lamballe. We have sent and received greetings and work
from our partner schools and in doing so, we have used Literacy, Geography and artistic skills
to create their work. We have focussed on telling each other about ourselves, the water around
us in Yorkshire, and about local artists.
In school, we have Comenius assemblies where we all look at the work we have been
doing for the project. This year, in class, we have all studied a local artist and tried to create
some work in their style. The project has given an added interest to our lessons that is based
on our European neighbours and given a global dimension to our work.
Teachers and other adults who work at Worth Valley have been involved in travelling to
see our partner schools and our new friends. These trips have not only been enjoyable, but
have also broadened our thinking about our own teaching and learning. Being involved in the
Comenius Project during the last three years has refreshed our professional skill. It has
enabled us to see beyond the English education system, given our children new and exciting
lessons and most importantly created lasting friendships between four very different schools
and countries.
We live in Keighley and go to Worth Valley Primary School, West Yorkshire. We really enjoyed
looking at pictures painted by David Hockney. We chose to work on a picture called Four Part
Splinge. We made the picture bigger and used pastels to make the picture our own. We hope you
enjoy looking at it.

Muncheeee
Xantha
My Comenius work
Hi I’m Xantha,
I live in Keighley and go to Worth Valley Primary School, West Yorkshire, England.
My Comenius work is about Henry Moore. We had to design a sculpture based on Henry Moore and
his style. He liked abstract sculptures, reclining figures and pierced shapes. Later on in his life he
created mother and daughter sculptures.
My sculpture is based on my teddy, and my sculpture is called Muncheeee because my teddy is
called Munchy and it has been turned abstract by making it have swirls for eyes and the outline of
the arms holes. I hope you will like my sculpture design.
Trillian
My Comenius work
Hi! I’m Trillian,
I live in keighley and go to Worth Valley Primary School, West Yorkshire, England.
My Comenius work is about Henry Moore. We have been studying works by Henry Moore and I have
made a design based on a Henry Moore sculpture. He liked abstract, reclining figures or ones with
pierced holes. I based my design on a giant raspberry with a rabbit in the middle!
Evie
Hi, we’re Evie and Abi and we have looked at the work of L.S. Lowry and created our own picture
based on his style. We loved using pipe cleaners to make the figures! We hope you enjoy looking at
our work.

Adam Judson
River Aire
Hi! My name is Adam Judson,
I attend Worth Valley Primary School in Keighley, England.
I have based my art work in the style of Hockney. David Hockney is a local artist who was born in
Bradford. I like the way he repeats patterns and makes one big picture from smaller pieces.
My work is a picture of Malham Cove. Malham Cove is in the Yorkshire Dales. It is the source of the
River Aire and this river runs through our town of Keighley.
Beth Thornhill
Hi! My Name is Beth Thornhill.
I have created a picture of the local Yorkshire landscape using tissue paper. Here you can see a large
sky, the hills of Yorkshire, one of our many rivers and a small windy country lane. I have looked at the
work of David Hockney and tried to create a similar work to his using bright colours.
Josh Kelly
Hi! I’m Josh!
My name is Josh Kelly. I attend Worth Valley Primary School and I live in Keighley, England.
I did my landscape in the style of David Hockney. It is a picture of the countryside and coast of
Yorkshire. I used pastels to complete the picture which had been sliced up.
I enjoyed doing this piece of work but it was difficult to slice the work into even stripes.
West Yorkshire Countryside
Kirra Coates
Hello. My name is Kirra Coates.
I live in Keighley and I am a Year 6 pupil at Worth Valley Primary School in England.
My tissue paper picture is of the West Yorkshire countryside.
It’s in the style of David Hockney. I was inspired to do my art work in the style of Hockney because he
uses bright colours and I have tried to do so as well.
