Collins COBUILD
This catalogue includes the full range of Collins COBUILD dictionaries and reference titles. When the first Collins COBUILD dictionary was published in 1987, it revolutionized dictionaries for learners. It was the first of a new generation of language reference materials that were based on actual evidence of how English was used, rather than lexicographer intuition. Collins and the University of Birmingham, led by the linguist John Sinclair, developed an electronic corpus in the 1980s, called the Collins Birmingham University International Language Database (COBUILD). This corpus, which for several years was known as the Bank of English, became the largest collection of English data in the world. Collins COBUILD dictionary editors use the Collins Corpus to analyze the way that people really use language. Ensuring that the Collins COBUILD titles are an accurate reflection of current language is very important, and in this catalogue you will find information about a major new edition of the Collins COBUILD English Usage (p. 27). We are also expanding the Collins COBUILD range, and you can find all our new titles, such as the brand-new Collins COBUILD International Business Dictionary (p. 21), in this catalogue. Sitting alongside the teacher- and student-oriented Collins COBUILD titles are our Easy Learning titles (pp. 28-31), which are the perfect English reference for everyone studying English at home, or in their spare time. And finally, we have some major new language and reference titles for children, including Collins COBUILD First English Words (p. 22), which is a bright, appealing book that should help all young children have fun learning their first English words. As Catherine says, wed love to hear from you about our dictionaries and reference titles. Do contact me at the email address below. In short, this is an excellent book. It feels like all the practice and advice an experienced IELTS tutor would give to a class has been cleverly put into one little book and its very clear layout and answer pages make it perfect for self study and very useable for teachers. For us teachers, preparing for an IELTS reading class is quite time consuming and this book goes as far as anything Ive ever seen in making that job as easy as possible. If you want to indicate the way in which something was said, you can use a reporting verb such as shout, wail, or scream. Verbs like these usually occur only in written stories. Jump! shouted the old woman. Oh, poor little thing, she wailed. Get out of there, I screamed. Here is a list of verbs that indicate the way in which something is said: bellow call chorus cry mumble murmur mutter scream shout shriek storm thunder wail whisper yell
She replied, My first thought was to protect him. One student commented: He seems to know his subject very well.
However, the reporting verbs agree, command, promise, and wonder are hardly ever used in front of a quote.
changing the order of the subject and the reporting verb 7.24
When a reporting verb comes after a quote, the subject is often put after the verb. Perhaps he isnt a bad sort of chap after all, remarked Dave. I see, said John. I am aware of that, replied the Englishman. Note that this is not done when the subject is a pronoun, except in some literary contexts.
7.20
BE CREATIVE
Another way of describing the way in which something is said is to use a verb that is usually used to describe the sound made by a particular kind of animal. Excuse me! Susannah barked. You can use a verb such as smile, grin, or frown to indicate the expression on someones face while they are speaking. Im awfully sorry. Not at all, I smiled. It was a joke, he grinned.
Clear explanations of common grammatical patterns using simple language Thousands of examples from the Collins Corpus illustrate grammar points in everyday English
BE CREATIVE
You use verbs like bark and smile in direct speech when you want to create a particular effect, especially in writing.
7.22
If you put the reporting verb in the middle of a quote, it must go in one of the following positions: after a noun phrase That man, I said, never opened a window in his life.
Unique notes on how the language works help you express yourself more confidently and freely
