    D'Alembert's solution provides a general solution to the one-dimensional wave equation in terms of an arbitrary initial displacement and velocity. By using the method of characteristics, D'Alembert was able to express the displacement of a vibrating string or rod at any point in space and time as the sum of an inward-propagating wave and an outward-propagating wave.
