Spring 2013 The newsletter of Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County
A Message from Executive Director Bonnie Campbell

Changing Futures, One Family at a Time

Thank you for taking a moment of your valuable time to read our Solutions Newsletter, and that you will come to know Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County a little bit better. We are a countywide nonprofit agency providing safe confidential shelter, support and solutions for women and their families fleeing domestic violence. While many challenges face our organization, all are met with willing spirits, knowing our efforts will make transformation possible in the lives of the families we serve. One of my goals since I joined the agency as Director a few months ago was to deepen our collaborations with agencies community wide in meaningful and measurable ways. I am proud to report that we are making progress in the area with positive results. I am proud of our staff and volunteers who work diligently and in inspirational ways to meet the needs of our clients and, in the process weve grown into a deeply committed and unified team. We understand the importance of remaining flexible in the face of our ever changing environment, and the value of supporting and sustaining one another each and every day. Why DO we do this intensely emotional work? Let me tell you. One mother Ill call Caroline recently came into our Emergency Shelter with her three young children at 3:00 in the morning. She and her children had been traumatized by many years of horrific experiences of domestic violence. Caroline and her children had not yet realized that they had finally left behind the only life they had ever known in order to save their own. No one got much sleep that night, but nevertheless, our staff started coordinated efforts to provide counseling and support and Caroline began the long process of freeing herself and her children from the intergenerational cycle of violence that had been their world. Caroline and her children spent 45 days in our Emergency Shelter. She was advocated for and supported by our caring, professional staff in every aspect of the return of her freedom and journey towards safe, independent living. I met Caroline after she had successfully completed the program at our Emergency Shelter and was living in our Transitional Housing Program. Her children were attending new schools, and she had both a new job and a newfound desire to help other women who had been battered and hadnt found the safety and security she now enjoyed. I talked with her about her hopes and dreams, watching her children play nearby, and I so enjoyed the happy laughter and joy that Carolines family were clearly feeling. I thought to myself: This is the moment I work for. This is the reason our volunteers give to this organization. This is why our team comes to work every day with smiles on their faces. I felt transformed simply sitting next to this amazing woman and her kids. I was so humbled by her courage, and also so proud of Domestic Violence Solutions for the impact it has on this community. On behalf of our Board of Directors, our dedicated team of employees, all our volunteers and the families we shelter and serve, please accept my heartfelt appreciation. You know why you support Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County, just as I do. Your generous donations truly transform the lives of others, and not just the clients we serve. Thank you for being a part of the solution in ending domestic violence, one family at a time.

Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County works to end the intergenerational cycle of violence by providing prevention and intervention services and by challenging societys attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to effect social change.

Presidents Report

Thank You to Susan Trescher

A Message from Board President, Claudette Roehrig

Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County is thrilled to announce that we recently received a One Million dollar donation to our endowment fund that will honor our newest member of the Legacy Club, Susan Trescher. Susans gift is a wonderful tribute to donor generosity, agency management foresight, and the foundations vigilant stewardship, said Jan Campbell, senior vice president of philanthropic services, communications, and marketing at The Santa Barbara Foundation, which will professional manage this gift to ensure our fund remains strong over time while providing DVS with a yearly income. We are honored to partner with the DVS board and staff to put Susans legacy to work forever, said Jan. We at DVS are equally honored to receive this gift from an individual who understood the importance of keeping our safety net strong; by naming DVS in her living trust, Susan Trescher has provided additional stability during these challenging economic times for nonprofits at a time when the safety net is becoming fragile and frayed. Born in Glendale in 1928 to George Trescher and Susan Shea Trescher, Susan Trescher graduated from UC Berkeley and briefly taught before deciding to pursue a law degree. She was accepted to Harvard Law School as a member of the third class to admit women and she graduated in 1955, one of only eight women in a class of 440. Susan was drawn to Santa Barbara and in 1964 the Santa Barbara County Counsel hired her as the first woman ever offered a full-time permanent position as an attorney. After brief periods in other departments she was assigned to assist the Planning Commission and quickly developed expertise in land law use. With her guidance, the County Supervisors, Architectural Board of Review, and other county departments developed the policies, procedures and regulations that have helped maintain the natural environment in Santa Barbara. Susan was a member of the Legal Aid Foundation and Santa Barbara Women Lawyers (serving as president on each of their boards), and was also on the board of the Santa Barbara County Bar Association. In 1998, Susan was honored with the Attorney of the Year award from the Santa Barbara Women Lawyers.

With the gift from The Susan Trescher Living Trust, Susan now takes her place among a number of women and men, whose gifts to the DVS Legacy Club grow our endowment fund to provide essential stability and ensure DVS ability to deliver core services even in the most challenging economic times. Susan Trescher was a longtime supporter of DVS because she understood the value of supporting womens issues and was impressed with our programs for women and children. She created a legacy making sure her charitable intentions were realized in perpetuity. Legacy Club members will continue the momentum of the DVS mission to end the intergenerational cycle of violence by providing prevention and intervention services and by challenging societys attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to effect social change. Why We Give... T

wo years ago, Michele Schneiderman started volunteering at the Womens Shelter in Santa Maria. She was very deeply touched by the terrible conditions the women came from and what they must endure to survive. I came home many times and said to my husband that we need to be more involved. And soon, they were. Last year both Michele and Bill Schneiderman became members of the DVS Board of Directors. Michele has taken the 40-hour certification class and has begun to reach out to teens about DVSs services, and Bill has been on a crusade to raise money from large corporations and foundations. His special touch writing compelling correspondence has over the years, elicited responses from major corporate CEOs and others, including President Bill Clinton. We give because domestic violence is a silent killer and we need to help not only those who are going through it and provide them with a safe haven but also to let all who will listen know how important it is to support this organization. We give because if we do. so will others.

Emeriti & Honorary Counsel

December 1, 2012
Thank you to the Melillo family for welcoming our Emeriti, Honorary Council and DVS Board members to Villa Polo for a holiday gathering in December that included docent led tours of the 1912 residence designed by Francis T. Underhill in 1912. Built as the original Santa Barbara Polo Club, the rich history of the house included stories of a polo game in which Will Rogers famously broke his hand during a polo match. The original property was on ten acres but is now divided into eight parcels. Present owner Jim Melillo purchased the home in 2006 and spent more than 18 months restoring and refurbishing the property. His mother, Stella, was on hand to comment on the various owners and their contributions to its architecturally unique design. DVS dignitaries enjoyed a light reception and wines before breaking off into groups to tour the house.

Sweetheart Ball hosted by Trilogy Service Club The Trilogy Service Club hosted a glamorous Sweetheart Ball
