Clan as a Social Capital: A Sociological Study of Clan Loyalty Components and

Transmissions in the Jordanian Society
Mohammad Al-Hourani*
ABSTRACT
This study aimed at revealing that if a clan in the Jordanian society is still regarded as a social capital for
Jordanian people. In order to prove this goal, the study measured five interested components that clanloyalty rely on emotional support, access to scarce resources, solidarity mobilization, relational networking
and background homogeny. A questionnaire was designed to collect data Form a sample of (3032) males
in the north of Jordan (Irbid, Mafraq, Ajloun, and Jarash).
The results showed that the clan is still regarded as a social capital, and clan loyalty was strongly
appreciated. Besides, the results showed that the clan is still provided people with an emotional support
embodied in ontological safety, self- reliability and reduction of anxiety. Then, the clan provides people
with scarce resources such as: money, job, prestige, vertical mobility and social power. People achieve
homogeny from their clan loyalty, which resides in relational equilibrium, cultural harmony, and common
agreements, Besides, people acquire solidarity mobilization which reflects mobilizing relatives to do an
important tasks and to mobilize them in an urgent situations. Furthermore, clan gives people a membership
by networking with other members (relatives). This membership maintaine clan network by attending
meetings and keeping in touch with relatives.
Above all, the results showed that all people from all economic stratumes, wether married or not, worked
or not, having strong loyalty to the clan relational network. It shows that elderly have more loyalty than
youth; people who are residents in the villages and badia are more loyal than city residents, Finally,
educated people have less loyalty more than uneducated people.
Keywords: Clan, Social Capital , Clan loyalty, Clan relational network.
