Aaron Rosenke Email: Aaron.rosenke@lethsd.ab.ca Twitter: twitter.com/MrRosenke Office: PE Main Office Class Website: rosenkegppe.weebly.com OR scan Course Description
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Throughout the course it is anticipated that students will continue to develop a desire to participate in physical activity and create for themselves a positive quality of life.

Course Objectives

Students throughout the course will: Acquire, experience and demonstrate a variety of skills through varying developmentally appropriate movement activities Understand, experience and appreciate the health benefits that result from physical activity. Interact positively with others through communication, teamwork, leadership and fair play Assume responsibility and desire to lead an active way of life.

Course Assessment: Physical Education

Students will receive a percentage grade in Physical Education. Students will be evaluated in two main areas: Physical Skills and Social Skills. A combination of teacher evaluation and student self-evaluation will combine to assess the two components. The criteria for the two areas of evaluation are as follows:

PHYSICAL SKILLS - 50%

Grades 7,8

The physical skills mark will consist of the students ability to perform the skills of certain activities, show improvement and desire to increase their success of the skills and apply skills to game and situational settings. These components require students to actively participate and demonstrate effort in their physical education engagement. The following rubric will be used as the outline to designate the mark for this component:

Performance/ImprovementParticipationEffort
5 Always 4 Almost Always 3 Often 2 Sometimes 1 Never

Physical Skills

Participates in all parts of PE class willingly and with energy Works at a challenging level relative to performance ability Is willing to take risks and be positive and open to new ideas in order to achieve an activity goal and improve skills/fitness Performs skills with success relative to ability Successfully applies skills to games and situation Utilizes time efficiently Is self-motivated and enthusiastic about participating in warm-up and cool-down activities Gets involved in game play and contributes to the betterment of the class

SOCIAL SKILLS - 50%

Grade 7,8

How you behave and interact with your teacher and classmates in physical education class is equally important as your effort and participation in the activities. For this reason, the social skills you demonstrate are worth half of your grade in P.E. Simply put, the kind of person you are and how you behave on a day-to-day basis in P.E. class is just as important as your ability to perform a sport specific skill. The social skills mark will consist of students being present, prepared and punctual for class. During engagement of activities students will be assessed on their leadership, dependability, cooperation, sportsmanship and teamwork capability. The following rubric will be used as the outline to designate the mark for this component:
Social Skills CooperationFair PlayCommunicationLeadershipSafety/Responsibility 5 Always 4 Almost Always 3 Often 2 Sometimes 1 Never

Communicates positive and encouraging feelings about personal performance and that of others Demonstrates respectful, polite, positive attitudes and behaviours

Demonstrates a sense of leadership, followership, fair play, teamwork, etiquette, and cooperation using good judgment at all times Follows established routines and instructions, and helps with equipment set-up and take down Displays a personal responsibility regarding attendance, punctuality and dress Is mindful of the safety responsibilities of participating in physical education

*Assessments will include observations, discussions, demonstrations, self-assessment, feedback, and in some cases written responses. Students are responsible for demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and attributes of individuals that understand what healthy living is and physical activitys role is. While knowledge-based assessment will not be a large portion of the students grades, small responses will be completed outside of the gymnasium and will be available on the class website for student access at all times. These may include exit slips, goal setting tasks, or small research pieces. None will be overly timeconsuming. Paper copies of these are available upon request.

FINAL GRADE
New for 2012-2013 your Physical Education mark will be 100% based on your involvement during Physical Education. A separate Health mark will be given based on the established curriculum taught by a different teacher.

PROPER GYM STRIP

For safety and cleanliness, proper gym strip is required in ALL GPMS physical education classes. Simply put, this consists of gym shorts, Tshirts, socks and running shoes in the gym with sweatpants and sweatshirts appropriate for cooler outside weather. Gym strip should be washed regularly. Gym strip should not be worn under your regular daily clothes as this defeats the purpose of changing for physical activity. NO loafer style shoes, boots, skater shoes or sandals are allowed. A second pair of running shoes is highly recommended. REMEMBER, when you forget your gym strip, you hurt your ability to participate, which affects your grade. After a third dress infraction in a reporting period, parents will be notified of the problem. If the situation persists, school administration will be notified and a plan of action that could include detentions, parent conferences and in-school suspensions will be formed. 1st no gym strip = one free chance (Must bring homework to work on) 2nd no gym strip = loss of 2% of total mark (Alternate assignment) 3rd no gym strip = loss of 2% of total mark and a phone call home by teacher 4th no gym strip = loss of 2% of total mark and administrator intervention

LATES
If you are late for a class and do not have a reasonable explanation you will lose 1% each time. BEING CHANGED AND READY TO PARTICIPATE IS THE KEY TO MAXIMIZING YOUR P.E. MARK!!!!!

Class Website rosenkegppe.weebly.com

This website will be used as a portal into a small weekly writing piece. It is a part of the participation grade for the course. It is broken into two parts: physical education and health. Under each you will find your grade and within that you will find specific assignments. You have a choice of either printing your work off and handing it in during the beginning of class or you may email it to me at the address on the first page of this outline. Either of these methods is acceptable. Exceptions on due dates are available under reasonable circumstances. For those without access to a computer at home, I am more than willing to provide paper copies of exit slips.

Remind 101
Remind 101 is a fantastic teaching tool that allows educators to text students without an exchange of phone numbers. Simply follow the link below and you will be directed to the subscription page. This service allows me to reach my students in the quickest and most dependable way. I can

inform of changes in plans that may affect what they need to bring to class, such as a light jacket if it is going to rain. I can also remind them of due dates and other important items. While not mandatory, I highly recommend that both students and parents subscribe to the list. It is 100% confidential and is a fantastic way to both involve oneself with the learning of your children and help remind them of tasks. Please check off the boxes on the return sheet if you and your student subscribe to the service. In order to subscribe, text the code of your class below to this randomized number 778-653-9057. Examples of Inappropriate Footwear for P.E. Class

Loose fitting skater style shoes can slide off the feet easily and are not allowed in P.E. class. These shoes can actually cause severe ankle injuries.

Crocs or similar style sandals are not allowed in P.E. class.

Flip flop sandals are not allowed in P.E. class.

Open toe sport sandals are not Allowed in P.E. class.

Example of Ideal Footwear for P.E. Class

Basically any snug fitting shoe that ties up with conventional laces or with Velcro closure straps, has a non-marking rubber sole and does not inhibit physical activity is appropriate. The shoes do not need to be expensive but they do have to be functional.
