Activities Today is my first day at Elizabeth Learning Center, a school that caters students from kindergarten to 12th graders. It is located in the city of Cudahy. When I arrived at 7:30 AM, all school personnel were busy enrolling students for the school year. I approached a lady in the main office and introduced myself as a teacher librarian candidate. She guided me to the school library and introduced me to Mr. Ken Completo, the Teacher Librarian. Mr. Completo gave me an overview of the school population and the school community. The school has a population of 1,700 students with a demographic of 98% Hispanic. The community has a high population of low income families; most students avail free lunch. Mr. Completo gave me a tour of the library, showing me the location of fiction and non-fiction books, and the different sections of the elementary, middle and high school books. He gave me an assignment to teach a reading lesson to the fourth grade class handled by Ms. Jennifer Baltazar. He told me to teach the lesson on Thursday, August 15 and Friday, August 16. Mr. Completo and Ms. Baltazar shared with me their ideas and strategies on how to carry out the lesson effectively. For the fourth graders, he chose the book Thank You, Mr. Falker as the lesson demonstration resource material; for the kindergarteners, he chose the books Silly Sally, The Napping House, and Bear Snores On for Reading Aloud resource materials. At 3:00 pm, a 12th grader volunteered to shelf the books; Mr. Completo explained to the student how to arrange the fiction and non-fiction books. Reflection In this school, most of the students are well-behaved; I enjoyed my day assisting the children check out their books and seeing them so enthused about reading. I am glad that I am assigned in this school not only because the students are disciplined but also the librarian is accommodating and willing to share his expertise to me. Im looking forward to positive and productive collaborations with Mr. Completo and Ms. Baltazar.

Field Experience Log School Site: Elizabeth Learning Center Hours: 7:30 AM 3:30 PM, 8 hrs. Activities When I arrived early this morning, I noticed that the enthusiastic children were already in line to borrow books. I helped two eager students locate books on Biscuit and on how to draw a dinosaur. I also assisted in the checking out books and putting stickers on due dates in the book covers. The check out procedure in this school is better compared with my high school. In my high school, we use a book card for students to sign in and then put it in the online catalog, which is quite tedious. Mr. Completo introduced the Permabound Booklists for me to use. He put my name in his webpage, View Mrs. Desturas List, and he requested me to select twenty science eBooks for third graders. Before lunch, Dr. Lesley Farmer and Ms. Diane Oestreich met with us at the school library. Dr. Farmer gave her orientation and reminded me of the projects to be submitted for this course like the field experience logs, e-Portfolio and the ethnographic study. Then she told us that she formally turned over her title as Field Experience Coordinator to Ms. Oestreich because she was promoted as a Department Chair at CSULB.

Reflection I appreciate the close supervision provided by the two coordinators of the program. Thanks to their hard work and guidance, I am confident in fulfilling the requirements. I realize that a good librarian, like Mr. Completo, is patient in assisting students at any given time. As a librarian, I must familiarize myself with all the books in library in order to fully assist students find the books they need. One of the most important things I observed in this library is the friendly atmosphere provided by the librarian. Student asks Mr. Completo questions and he answered them all in a calm and friendly manner.

Field Experience Log School Site: Elizabeth Learning Center Hours: 7:30 AM 3:30 PM, 8 hrs. Activities In the morning, I helped Mr. Completo check out books for the students. When the bell rang, he reminded the students to report to their classes and come back to the library after school. I showed to him my lesson plan to be presented at 1:00 pm and he gave some suggestions on how to improve it. A representative from Permabound, Mr. Tim, came to present their listing of books on their Permabound Website. He demonstrated how to make book lists and how to order books. His demonstration lasted for almost an hour. One high school teacher, with his class, asked permission to use the library for research work and check out books. At exactly 1:00 pm, I presented my Read Aloud lesson to the fourth graders. Mr. Completo and Ms. Baltazar were there to assist and observe me. Overall, the lesson presentation was a success. All students were actively participating in the lesson discussion. They were able to comprehend the whole story. In the afternoon, I also met and talked with the school principal, Ms. Sharon Sweet, at the school library.

Reflection The day was tiresome but productive. I was able to share and impart my knowledge to the fourth graders. I was initially anxious being observed by teachers, but then I gained my confidence when students actively participated in the discussions. At the end of the observation, Mr. Completo told me that it went great.

Field Experience Log School Site: Elizabeth Learning Center Hours: 7:30 AM 3:30 PM, 8 hrs. Activities When I arrived at the school library I noticed that each table has a signage that says, Please use your quiet voice. Thank you for your cooperation. I plan to do the same thing for my library. Like the previous days, I assisted Mr. Completo check out the AR books to students before the start of the first period class. A kindergarten teacher requested to use the library for her students to check out books. So, Mr. Completo prepared the library by displaying some simple books on every table. As soon as everybody was seated, the librarian began his orientation and discussed the rules and procedures for students to follow while inside the library. In the afternoon, Ms. Oestreich, the Field Experience Coordinator, came to observe the second part of my teaching demonstration which is based from the book, Thank You, Mr. Falker. On this lesson, students are expected to write a thank you letter to a teacher who helped them learn difficult lessons. The students found the lesson interesting and majority of them read their letters in front of the class. Ms. Baltazar made an extension of the lesson by revising one of the students letters using the process of elimination, expansion and insertion. A post conference followed after the observation which was conducted by Ms. Oestreich. Reflection It was the second day of my teaching demonstration and I felt so exhausted, but at the same time I felt happy and satisfied with the result. At first I thought that the students would have a hard time following the steps in writing a thank you letter, but I was wrong. I was amazed by their performance to write thank you letters and read them with confidence and eagerness in front of the class. Students who participated by reading and showing their work got a prize for their good work. A post conference followed which was conducted by Ms. Diane Oestreich, the Field Experience coordinator of CSULB. She gave suggestions, insights and recommendations for improvement. She asked for the finished work of the students and Ms. Baltazar provided them to me right away. Overall, after completing the two demonstrations, I felt satisfied and fulfilled.

Field Experience Log School Site: Elizabeth Learning Center Hours: 7:30 AM 3:30 PM, 8 hrs. Activities When I arrived at the library, I saw Mr. Completo already assisting the children check in and check out their AR books. Then he showed me his revised library schedule for the elementary classes to check out the AR books. He allotted 30 minutes per class. This revision was made due to the teachers and the administrations conflict regarding breakfast in the classroom. Majority of the teachers are not in favor of this particular district mandate. At 9:00 A.M., Kindergarten children with their adviser, Ms. Tolman came to the library for the Read Aloud lesson. I let them squat comfortably in rows of five. I introduced myself and gave some motive questions before reading the three books to them. They selected, Bear Snores On to be read first, followed by, Silly Sally and lastly The Napping House. The children enjoyed listening to the three stories and then they went back to their class. After lunch, a third grade teacher, Mr. Ramon Martinez accompanied his class to the library. The TL, Mr. Completo gave his orientation. He taught the students meaning of the symbols, like star for the picture books, circle for simple books and the triangle for transitional books. He also laid down his policies and procedures and assigned a permanent seat /table for each child.

Reflection I realized the importance of good management skills for librarians. Proper planning of activities (one week in advance) will ensure successful implementation of the activities. One important activity that a librarian should enforce at the start of the school year is the orientation of the policies and procedures to help maintain an aura of positive behavior inside the library.

Field Experience Log School Site: Elizabeth Learning Center Hours: 7:30 AM 12:30 PM, 5 hrs. Activities Like the previous week, Mr. Completo was already at his circulation desk assisting the children when I arrived. Then he requested me to Google Permabound by using his username and password to log in. I have to create a Recommended Reading Lists for Grades four and five for four consecutive months from September to December, 2013 totaling ten books per month. The copyright dates must be between 2009 and 2013; reading and interest level must be within the range of 4th - 5th grade, using nonfiction books. Before leaving the library, Mr. Completo gave me an additional assignment of writing down at least twelve famous people of the world with a phrase or inspirational sayings or quotes to represent that person.

Reflection As I look closely at every picture of the Women of Hope displayed at our library, I also wrote down their names and the inspirational quotes underneath their pictures. I am planning to make the quotations bigger and more attractive for all students to see and read. These quotations will serve as inspirations for the students so that they will strive harder and be successful in their studies in the future.
