980829 Period 1 September 9, 2013 The September 2 op-ed, Teen Culture Run Amok, deplorably compares Miley Cyruss

performance at the Video Music Awards, to a traumatic rape case, in which the victim was dehumanized, and obviously a result of a misogynistic society (Cohen). Like many Hollywood stars who experience great fame at a young age, the state of Cyruss career should come at no surprise. Studies have shown and shown again, that ones upbringings have a profound impact on their character, an inevitable truth that is reflected in even the most prominent celebrities, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, etc. While it is apparent that Miley Cyruss latest antiques have shocked a previously undefiled fan base, no performance, regardless of the degree of indecency, should be tied to a federal misdemeanor. The Steubenville Rape was assuredly an atrocious violation of human safety, protection, and decency, however relating Miley Cyruss performance at the VMAs to heinous indecencies, such as rape is equally as repulsive. Teen culture has unquestionably changed over the past decades, however the avant-garde forms of expression, such as dancing, singing, and choices of public representation are undeniably granted to any citizen, and until such forms of expression breach civil laws, it behooves one to treat another the way they would like to be treated, and nobody would like to be subjected to irrational accusations.
