work as a village-based midwife back to life. one of the many tragic stories was the case of ka TO thi dhy th 32 year died from postpartum infection after giving birth in the farm. the dead made lan understand her important role in saving the lives of mather and children in her village and removing the long-lasting harmful traditional practices. it was believed by rac Lay people that like a hen laying eggs, a women can delivery her baby by herself. so RAC LAY women usually give birth at home or on the farm, assisted by only a mother, mother in law or husband. six months after the death of DHY, her husband went away and left his children at home alone. RAC LAY ethnic people believe that when a wife dies, the husband must leave family home, not bring any properties or take care of the children. it was easy and normal when she was giving birth last time. she did not feel paint at all, so we thought it was fine. this time, it was to diffcul for her, when the baby came the placenta did no came out for along time. she was so weak, the traditional midwife gave her same water, but she was could not save her life. DHY and NIET were advised to have reguler chek-up during pregnancy for the sake of both mother and child. as the wife gave birth normally last time, the thought everything would be fine this time, they did not foresse the consequences, it was too late. DHY'S youngest baby is six months and living with her siblings without receiving care form her mother or father. when she was three months old, her sibling started feeding her with rice or her mother's sister breastfed her as she is also having a small baby. the two babies were born the same month, but the motherless child suffers from seriuos malnutrition and weighs slightly more than half of the other one. this was one of the sad stories KA GIA THY LAN witnessed in her village. returning to her village as a trained ethic minority midwife. LAN tried to provide support to as many pregnant women and small children in the village as possible, at any time, day or night. she also provided chek-up in the farm where the pregnant women worked, as many did not want to go the commune health care center. through these visits, she diagnosed many promblems and saved many lives. one of the complicated cases was KA TU THI HEM whit her eight-month stillborn baby. right after finding the problems, the women was tranfered to the provincial hospital and her life was saved. in remote mountainous areas where people still live in poverty. it is normal for ethnic women to face potential life-threatening complication during pregnancy, delivery or recovery. many ethnic minority people area not aware of the benefits of giving birth in a sterile environment. and the husband often uses a knife, a piece of broken ceramic or a bamboo stick to cut the baby's

umbillical cord, whitout any desifectant. people believe the "forest god" causes maternal or child death. as a result, many tragic deaths are the direct result of poverty and harmful traditional practices. there is also the story of CHAM MA LE THI PHUONG , a RAC LAY ethnic women in the province's THUAN BUC district. she died when giving birth to her fifth baby at home. she did not know she was having twins and only one of the two babies was saved. the baby is now living whit his grandmother, but the child is small and weak whituot breastfeeding. CHAM MA LE THI PHUONG died, dead people don't have to care anymore. but, the children are loft behind. they are living whit my mother. my father-in-law's family bought formula for the child. my mother can't do much to help. it is very difficult time for as. ethnic minority people often have many children. when to mother dies, she leaves behind her children. i think there shouldbe sameone who is trained with midwifery skills, to provide antenatal care. this will help in reducing maternal and child death in mountainous areas. the first training for ethnic minitory midwives was organized by TU DU hospital in 1995. the trainees where often young female villagers who volunteered for this work. they left their home villagers to attend the training for six months. today, KA GIA THI LAN is going to visit to CA TO THI PICH at her house, PICH'S life was saved by LAN some days ago. we feel shy deliver at the health care center because there are to many people around. RAC LAY people prefer to give birth at home, rather than at hospitals or a health center. in the past , all of us delivered at home. i feel sad as there are still many women who don't pay attention to my advice. many women still give birth at home or on the farm whitout being assisted by skilled midwives. however, i will try to change their mindset. LAN hopes that one day the people and women in her village will change their ways of giving birth. LAN and other village-based midwieves in remote and mountainous areas play very important roles in saving the lives of many women and children. thus contributing to the country's sustainable

development

Namun , saya akan mencoba untuk mengubah pola pikir mereka. LAN berharap bahwa suatu hari orang-orang dan perempuan di desanya akan mengubah cara mereka melahirkan . LAN dan midwieves berbasis desa lainnya di daerah terpencil dan pegunungan memainkan peran yang sangat penting dalam menyelamatkan nyawa banyak wanita dan anak-anak . sehingga memberikan kontribusi terhadap pembangunan berkelanjutan di negara itu.
