Maths Inequalities

1. Basic Theorem

Notes

This applies for all inequality signs. Give an example: 3 > 1 (true), 3+1 > 1+1 (true)

2. Linear inequality
A. Basic type Inequalities follow all the rules which apply for linear equations. However, when multiplying or dividing by a negative number, the direction of the inequality is reversed. Use true statement and show that is false, but is true. Examples. o Solve: , , ( ) ( , ) , , ( ) ,

as a

B. Two way inequalities Treat each inequality as a separate one. Show that: 1 < 2 < 3 is the same as 3 > 2 > 1: useful in questions that have answers in 5 > 1< <5 Examples. o Solve: , , ,

> 1 and should be written as

3. Quadratic inequality
A. Perfect square type These will have only or ( ) in them. ( )

Examples. o Solve: ( ( ) ) , ( ) , ( ) , ( ) ,
( )

B. Non-perfect square types The aim is to solve the quadratic to find the solution. The inequality is then solved by drawing a schematic parabola. If (number in front of ) is positive, then concave up. If is negative, then concave down.
