ABSTRACT Energy plays the most vital role in the economic growth, security, progress and development as well as poverty eradication of any nation. Uninterrupted energy supply is a vital issue for all countries today. This paper; Energy & Power for Sustainable Development, looks at the structure of power systems, unrenewable and renewable sources of electric energy, African power industry, and common problems inherent in the African power industry. The role that renewable energy plays in sustainable development, the challenges at the power industry in Africa, energy efficiency and energy conservation in sustainable development were also looked into. Africa, especially Nigeria could benefit from the integrated interventions that would reduce the local air pollution and help the country to tackle greenhouse gas emissions. Many factors that need to be considered and appropriately addressed in the shift to its sustainable energy future are examined in this paper. This include: promotion of renewable energy resources, energy efficiency, application of energy conservation measures in various sectors such as construction of industrial, residential and office buildings.
