MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into a area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across the selectively permeable membrane. 95% of water is in the vinegar, and 74% of water is in the egg. I hypothesis, that molecules from a high concentrated area will transport though the membrane into the less concentrated area, which is inside the egg. Therefore, the egg will expand. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. CONCLUSION: In this lab we modeled the effects of osmosis. After a total of 4 days, the water molecules traveled across the selectively permeable membrane from a high area of concentration to a low area. Our groups egg expanded 3.6 cm, which is 0.7 cm more than the 7th grade average expansion. I hypothesized that the water would flow into the egg. My hypothesis was correct 100% of the time.

ANALYSIS: The eggshell dissolved when the egg was placed in vinegar. The chemical reaction of the acid in the vinegar and the calcium carbonate from the eggshell caused the shell to dissolve. Period 7 group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Group 3s egg expanded 3.4 cm more than group 7s egg. The rate in which group 3s expanded was about 1.125 cm per day, compared to group 7s egg whose rate expanded about 0.275 cm per day. These groups have different results because they all might have different calculations or mistakes the groups had made. Most likely, group 7 had the most different result than everyone else. Therefore, group 7s made errors. Water is important because cells need water to function living things. The most common functions of water is in maintaining the temperature and shape, diluting chemicals, and carrying materials in and out the cell.
