Overview This lesson plan is developed for 6th graders as a science lesson over kinetic and potential energy.

Learning Students will demonstrate their understanding of the difference Objectiv between kinetic and potential energy by labeling the energy es transfer in their roller coaster sketch. Teaching 6.4.3. Describe the transfer of energy amongst energy interaction. Standard s Required College Mentors laptop OR reserve a computer lab Materials Blank sheets of paper 2 colored pencils Writing utensils Stickers Procedur 1. Gather up the children and explain that they will be es learning about potential and kinetic energy. Tell them they get to use technology to help them learn today. 2. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPIPUDtM1BI and watch the video. * YouTube is a popular site that is becoming better known for educational purposed, by watching the video online, the students will be able to focus in rather than just sit and take notes from a teacher. 3. After the YouTube video, go to: http://www.brainpop.com/games/coastercreator/ and follow the online directions to run the online simulation. ***By using this simulation run off of internet explorer, the kids will be able to realistically see how kinetic and potential energy is used in real life. 4. Once the simulation is completed, pass out writing utensils, sheets of paper, and two colored pencils to each student. 5. Have the students draw their computer coaster on the sheet of paper, and have them color exactly where kinetic energy is taking place (with one colored pencil), and where potential energy is taking place (with the other colored pencil). Have them make a key as well so that it is clear which color is kinetic energy and which color is potential energy. 6. Give the student the paper to take home with the sticker and cleanup/ turn off computers..etc clean up duties. Assessme The assessment portion is based off of what they students nt colored/sketched and if they did it correctly. They will receive a checkmark once kinetic energy is labeled and colored correctly, and once potential energy is labeled and colored correctly. After each of the two activities are completed,

they will receive a sticker for completing the activity with accuracy. Based on what skill level the college mentor believes their student to be at, there may be a higher standard for level of accuracy when coloring and labeling the picture. http://www.enhr.ncsu.edu Learning Connection Brain Pop http://www.brainpop.com/lessonplans/coastercreatorexplor ingpotentialandkineticenergy/printable.weml YouTube Video (Kinetic and Potential Energy (Accessible Preview)). to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPIPUDtM1BI
