Dakota Miller English 1 block 4 Mrs. Knowles 12 September 2013 Gun Control Gun Control is any action taken by the federal government or by the state or local governments to regulate, through legislation, the sale, purchase, safety, and use of handguns and other types of firearms by individual citizens. The political and social debate over how much gun control is appropriate has been an extremely popular one for several decades. Another popularized question is whether or not the right to bear arms extends to private citizens or applies to only well regulated militias. It affects the lives of many people in the United States of America. Gun Control affects me because most of my family goes hunting with guns or they own a gun. If the government takes Gun Control to the next level and stops the sales of guns just because you have a bad history then that would be taking the right to bear arms away granted to us by the Second Amendment. If someone else causes people to get a background check to purchase a weapon, then you arent going to be very happy if you get denied the right to purchase the weapon. Shootings such as the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech, and the 2011 Tucson shooting is very unfortunate, but they are going to happen because you cant always tell who wants to go out and shoot people. As a little boy I grew up living on a 3 to 4 mile road were everybody that lived on that road was either family or good friends to the family. So I spent a lot of my time at my aunt and uncles house. My uncle Tim owned all the land around that road and was always

hunting on it with a lot of his friends and family. When they would bring a large buck home I would ask him many questions like who killed it, how did they kill it, where did he kill it. Eventually he must have got tired of me asking him questions because when I was asking him questions one day and he said do you want to go with me and your cousin Mitch tomorrow? then I got really excited. The next day we went down in the meadow and sat in the deer blinds. At first it was really boring because we sat there for almost 90 minutes before we seen any deer. After we seen the first deer five or six more came along behind it. My uncle said I had to wait for the right one to come. So we waited for another 20 minutes. Then I seen him, I knew he was the one I wanted so I told my uncle and he got the 12 gauge ready. I had only shot the 12 gauge a few times before so I was a little hesitant when I pulled the trigger because I knew that it was going to kick me pretty hard. I looked down my sights, aligned it with the bucks chest, pulled the gun tight to my shoulder, then in one motion I closed my eyes and pulled the trigger. Then it was all over for the buck, it was like a timer that ran out of time, you cant add any more time after it expires. After that I went on many hunting trips and campouts with my uncles and grandpa. I asked them if I could go hunting by myself when I was about 11 years old and they told me I wasnt allowed because I would get in trouble with the game warden and the police. That also made me very interested and angry with that topic. They told me I had to get a hunting license and then I had to wait for Deer hunting season to come.

When most people think of Gun Control they think of gang fighting but Gun Control really means any action taken by the federal government or by state or local governments to regulate, through legislation, the sale, purchase, safety, and use of

handguns and other types of firearms by individual citizens. Some restrictions that have been proposed or put into action include background check and waiting periods for people who want to buy a gun, and regulation of secondary market sales. Some more are mandatory child-safety locks, child-access prevention laws, concealment laws, bans on small and lightweight guns, and a controversial 1994 ban on assault weapons. The NRA or National Rifle Association was started by two union officers who wished to promote rifle shooting. Since then the NRA has become one of the world most powerful non-governmental organizations in the country. It works to protect personal firearm rights, hunting rights, sponsors educational programs on firearm safety, and promotes shooting as a sport. The NRA is against most gun control legislations. It claims that the strict gun control laws have done nothing but take away a form of self-defense from a law abiding citizen. The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, named after Jim Brady, is the largest organization working to promote gun control legislations. It claims that certain classes of guns should not be legal for private ownership. It also claims that guns in the home are more often used in accidental shootings, suicides, or criminal activity than in acts of self-defense. It supports more gun control legislation and better enforcement of current laws. Gun Control is a very interesting topic and is an endless debate in the United States. Some states take different approaches to the topic like New York, has taken step to stop guns that are purchased in other state from being brought to their state. Outside the United States rates of gun ownership tend to be much lower. The United States also has higher rates of gun violence which leads to more gun control laws. This topic could be researched even farther due to the endless debate and the growing laws in the United States. Without

guns some families in the United States will not be able to obtain much food or money. Some others will lack the abilities to go spend time with family and bond with friends. In other words gun control is taking away some peoples rights to go hunting.
