COURSEWORK OBJECTIVES: To enable students to: 1. demonstrate basic understanding of the principles and practices of assessment in primary English language teaching contexts; 2. design, construct and use various test types to assess language skills and content areas in the context of primary schools; 3. reflect on and discuss issues related to assessment in the primary English language classroom

ASSIGNMENT (100%) This assignment seeks to explore the assessments of language skills and language content employed by teachers in the ESL primary classrooms. The data collected from classroom observations will form the point of reference for test design and construction and for critical reflection. Part I Written Report on Classroom Observation(Individual) (30%)

The Task a. In pairs, observe an English teacher teaching and pay special attention to the test type employed by the teacher to assess any language skill(s) or language content. Take note of the test employed and evaluate it with regards to four basic principles of language assessment. With the teachers permission, audio record the lesson to document pertinent points with regards to the assessment. b. In about 900 words, write a report of your observation and comment on the strengths & weaknesses of the test and suggest improvements to make it more effective. Support your views and opinions with related literature. Append (if any) pictures, sketches, notes, and other supporting materials. Part II Test Design, Construction and Use in the Language Classroom (pairwork) (30%) The Task a. In pairs, identify one language skill or language content area you wish to teach. Come out with a lesson plan. Design a test or an assessment task that can be used to assess the language skill or content area identified. Take note of the improvements that you have suggested in Part I to make the assessment effective. Carry out the lesson in which you use the test or assessment task to assess the language skill or content area identified. Append the lesson plan and the test or assessment task you have constructed. Part III Critical Report (individual) (40%)

The Task a. Individually, write a critical reflection of about 1 200 words. Your reflection should include insights that you have gained in designing, constructing and using a test or an assessment task in the ESL primary classroom. You may suggest alternative ways in which the test or assessment task could be designed or used. Explain the basis of your recommendations and substantiate with relevant references. Submit the reflection together with the lesson plan, the test or assessment task and the report on your classroom observation.

Title of essay e. Lecturers name 8. You should adhere to the deadline. Without an approved extension of time, late submission will be dealt with severely.
