Bangladesh banks encouragement to Green Banking and its prospects in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a country of enormous opportunities. After its liberation war, it has rapidly changed its economic status and in spite of so many obstacles, recently it has introduced itself as a middle income country. But now, along with other countries of the world, it is facing some problems like- global warming, excessive use of carbon-di-oxide and CFC gas, and also some other climatic change and all these are a great threat to our economy. The green banking concept is relatively new in Bangladesh and yet to get momentum. Actually green banking is nothing but the operations of the banking activities giving special attention on the social, ecological, and environmental factors aiming at the conservation of nature and natural resources. The government and Bangladesh Bank have remained fully aware and proactive in this respect. In 2011, Bangladesh bank has launched a comprehensive green banking initiative by providing the commercial banks and other financial institutions policy guidelines to follow and report their green banking activities after a certain interval.

Objectives of the study: The main objective of this study is to analyze the prospects of green banking in Bangladesh. Along with this objective, the other sub objectives are To study the Bangladesh banks guidelines to green banking and its implementation. To study the practices of green banking in the banks internal operations. To create financial products and services that supports commercial development with environmental benefits. To study management of environmental risks. Identify opportunities for innovative environment friendly business projects.
