][End of Arabic Quotation.

[English Translation]:
Abu Bakrah narrated to us, saying, Mumal narrated to us, saying, Sufyaan
narrated to us from `Aasim ibn Kulayb, from his father, from Waail ibn Hujr
who said, I saw Rasoolullaah one day
and he had placed his hands on his chest; one of them upon the other. So, this
was from amongst the proofs against those who hold the second opinion, i.e.
those who say, We feel that the reality of the chest is that the hands should
not be placed upon it, according to a verdict of one of the two groups. Rather,
they the hands are placed upon other than it, from that which is besides it i.e.
below the chest, and there has never been hesitance in the affirmation of that
type of placing i.e. below the chest.
And we found those who said that the meaning of it is the placing of the one
hand upon the other in Salaah, from the Companions of Rasoolullaah
, and they were: Sayyidunaa `Ali and Sayyidunaa
Abu Hurayrah who both said: Indeed, that placing the hands
below the navel is from the Sunnah.
However, this statement was not reached through the facet of investigation,
nor through the facet of logical reasoning; hence, what Sayyidunaa Waail ibn
Hujr narrated from An-Nabi is taken over
their verdict.
The action of those two companions was done after careful consideration was
given to the actions of Rasoolullaah . Hence, what we
have narrated from the two of them is commensurate with what we have
narrated from Sayyidunaa Waail ibn Hujr .
Furthermore, when it has been established that what Sayyidunaa Waail ibn
Hujr narrated from An-Nabi conforms to
the actions of the People of the Two Books i.e. the Jews and the Christians in
their prayers, while what we have narrated from Sayyidunaa `Ali

and Sayyidunaa Abu Hurayrah is not taken from anyone

other than An-Nabi himself unlike the first opinion i.e.
that of Sayyidunaa Waail , then what Sayyidunaa Waail
narrated is the preferred opinion, due to the fact that an-Nabi
used to follow the Sharee`ah The Divine Law of those who
preceded him from the Ambiyaa Prophets Blessings of Allaah be
upon them until such time that Allaah brought about for him a Sharee`ah
which abrogated all of the previous ones. Hence, all of the narrations are
authentic; what Sayyidunaa Waail ibn Hujr narrated was the
old verdict, whilst what Sayyidunaa `Ali and Sayyidunaa Abu
Hurayrah narrated is the new opinion which abrogated that
which was before it.
Now, if someone says, You have mentioned in this chapter that, the things
which fall under the term Sunnah are those things which were not revealed
in the Kitaab i.e. the Quraan. Furthermore, you have explained that by citing
the verdict of Sayyidunaa `Ali in which interpretation is made
of the Statement of Allaah `Azza wa Jall:
Wanhar.
That indeed it is the placing of the hands, one upon the other, in Salaah. And
you have negated the possibility of it i.e. this Aayah referring to the Nahr
Slaughter carried out on the Day of Nahr i.e. `Eid-ul-Adh-haa, or Bakri `Eid as it
is referred to by the Indians, due to the statement of Rasoolullaah
concerning that. And indeed, this conforms to our Sunnah. However,
thereafter you narrated from Sayyidunaa `Ali and Sayyidunaa
Abu Hurayrah that the placing of hands in Salaah, one upon
the other, is done below the navel. So when it is confirmed that the placing of
the hands, one upon the other in Salaah is from the Sunnah, that shows that it
is not the meaning of the Aayah, like how the Sunnah concerning Nahr
Slaughter according to you points out that it is not the meaning of the Aayah.
It is said to him, As for the verdict of Sayyidunaa `Ali and
Sayyidunaa Abu Hurayrah concerning what we have narrated
from them from that which has been mentioned that indeed it is from the
Sunnah, so that is not in regards to the Interpreted Slaughtering nor in regards
to the placing of one hand upon the other in Salaah; rather, it is with regards to

the place upon which the hands are placed. Moreover, no mention of that has
come in the Kitaab; rather, it comes in the Sunnah, so it is Sunnah as they both
had said.
Furthermore, there are narrations from Rasoolullaah
which are Mutawaatir Continuous regarding the placing of the right hand upon
the left, and the taking of the left hand by the right, and from that is the
Hadeeth of Sayyidinaa `Ali which we have made mention of in
this chapter, and from them the narrations is also: [End of quote.]
