Shedding of deciduous teeth

Definition of shedding
Shedding or exfoliation of teeth is the physiological elimination of the deciduous teeth due to their root resorption prior to the eruption of their permenant successors at specific ages

Pattern of shedding of deciduous anterior teeth

Histology of shedding

Histology of Shedding:

Osteoclast-like cells are stimulated by the pressure from erupting permanent teeth and resorb the root. These cells line up along the root and form resorption lacuna (scalloped shaped areas of root resorption).

Mechanism of resorption and shedding:

A ) Resorption of hard dental tissues. both osteoclasts and odontoclasts .resorbe bone and hard dental tissues.
B ) Resorption of dental soft tissues. * PDL..Programmed cell death ( Apoptosis ) *Pulp..play passive role.

During root resorption: *periods of resorption and periods of cementum repair.

*Cementoblasts deposit cementum in areas of resorption forming a reversal line. Some cementoblasts embedded in the cementum and called cementocytes.

Clinical considerations

Ankylosis of primary first molar

Ankylosis of primary first molar

Ankylosis

Congenitally missing tooth

Retained primary first molar

Band and loop space maintainer

Space loss due to premature extraction of primary second molar without space maintenance

Remnants of deciduous tooth

Good occlusion
