Science, Social Studies

Proposed Dates: October 27th December 19th Concepts: Change, causation, connection

To research a science experiment that involves a physical or chemical change Grade Four students and teachers Experiment report and presentation Highlighting and articulating a chemical or physical change. Providing a detailed explanation of the experiment including the cause of the changes using appropriate scientific vocabulary Formulating an effective, original aim that has been predicted, measured and explained using a scientific investigation Data gathered and findings from the experiment are visually and orally presented in detail using scientific language.

Summative Assessment

Possible learning experiences these may take place in individual subject time, or within the Unit of Inquiry
Writing: Procedural Writing -organize ideas in a logical sequence; -select vocabulary to achieve desired effects; -writing to inform; Ongoing: -reread, edit and revise to improve their own writing, for example, content, language, organization -work independently, to produce written work that is legible and well-presented, written either by hand or in digital format. Reading -access information from a variety of texts both in print and online, for example, newspapers, magazines, journals, comics, graphic books, e-books, blogs, wikis -as part of the inquiry process, work cooperatively with others to access, read, interpret, and evaluate a range of source materials -identify relevant, reliable and useful information and decide on appropriate ways to use it Ongoing: -read a variety of books for pleasure, instruction and information -reflect regularly on reading and set future goals Constructing Meaning Transferring meaning Applying with understanding understand that measures can fall between describe measures that fall between numbers on a select appropriate tools and units of measurement numbers on a measurement scale, for example, scale 3 kg, between 4 cm and 5 cm read and write digital and analogue time on 12understand relationships between units, for hour and 24-hour clocks example, metres, centimetres and millimetres Students will explore and research states of matter and scientific investigation using online resources such as Brainpop and Espresso Students will explore how to search for information on the internet safely and effectively. Students will review the importance of making good notes, sourcing and saving paper while researching and use online tools to support this. Viewing & Presenting: -design posters and charts, using shapes, colours, symbols, layout and fonts, to achieve particular effects - explain how the desired effect is achieved - prepare, individually or in collaboration, visual presentations using a range of media, including computer and web-based applications - with guidance, use the internet to access relevant information; process and present information in ways that are personally meaningful Oral Listening & Speaking: -use a range of specific vocabulary in different situations, indicating an awareness that language is influenced by purpose, audience and context -verbalize their thinking and explain their reasoning Ongoing: -organize thoughts and feelings before speaking

Teacher Questions

Inquiry into:

1. The different states of matter 2. How matter changes 3. How scientists investigate

Success Indicators:

What does matter look like and how can we describe it? 1 How can materials be changed? 2 3 What are chemical/physical changes? What are the advantages/disadvantages of changing materials?

Learner Profile and Attitudes

Inquirer Curiosity Responsibility

Arabic

Students will learn about Matter. Students will learn about long and shorts vowels using the concepts In music, students will review basic recorder skills. They will define the procedures of creating and changing sound on recorder and reading notation. Students will explore the connection between notes and rhythms and improvise melodies. In strings, students will focus on instrumental technique including how small changes in posture or finger placement can make a big difference in sound. Students will connect prior knowledge in technical skill to new pieces of music. Students will undertake games or adventure challenge, focusing on gross motor skills, game movement skills, application, cooperating and respecting others. For games students will work through various court based activities to develop ball skills as well as understanding gameplay and strategies. In adventure challenge students will focus on team building activities, cooperation and communication skills, evaluating each other and themselves. Students will perform jumps, throws and running events in the athletics unit where they will measure and time their distances and speed. They will explore what a good sprint, jump, throw looks like and how they can improve their own performance. Students will learn skills that help them make observational drawings. They will investigate how changes to line and colour affect the drawing. They will conclude this unit with a still life painting. Inquirer Using destiny to find information. Responsibility to look after books and put them back on the correct shelf. Connections how are books at a certain number connected. Structure of a non-fiction book
