Professional Development Plan 2 Abstract The purpose of this assignment is to help determine a plan for my career as a nurse and my professional development that will include analysis of my strengths and weaknesses, as well as short and long-term goals. Specific actions are documented in the plan, which will help me to attain the goals.

Professional Development Plan 3 Professional Development Plan Analysis of my current strengths and weaknesses of my professional nursing performance is categorized in the next paragraphs. This analysis is broken down by the ANA Standards of Professional Performances, inspiring self awareness surrounding my personal professional nursing practice. (ANA 2004, p33-41) My 5 year and 10 year goals are included along with a plan for improving my weaknesses and reaching the goals I have set for myself. PROFESSIONAL NURSING PERFORMANCE Quality of Practice My strengths in performance as a nurse include demonstration of quality by documentation in a responsible, accountable and ethical manner. Improvement can be made by increasing my participation in quality improvement activities, by identifying aspects of my practice and the practice of my employer which are important for quality monitoring. Included in my weaknesses are lack of analysis and collection of data while using indicators developed to monitor quality and effectiveness of nursing practice. I feel that I am doing the work without getting overly evolved in the situation. Education I do participate in ongoing education that is mandatory by my employer and continued education (for my license), but I do not participate in any education beyond that. I am committed to lifelong learning through self-reflection, but I do not inquire about identification of learning needs I wait to receive an email telling me when something is due. When working in a specialized area new experiences are limited, but I do seek out new opportunities when ever available. I do not use current research to enhance role performance and could improve on this educational role.

Professional Development Plan 4 Professional practice evaluation The area I practice in is not a very diverse area, which gives me few opportunities to evaluate appropriate care in a cultural or ethical manner. When these cases do appear in our hospital I feel that I do not have enough information to be sensitive to the cultural and ethical differences. When obtaining informational feedback regarding my practice I have been open to critics including asking for the opinion of my peers. The hospital I work in evaluates my practice annually and in the past this has been strength for me. We also have a Kudos peer review that includes a 4 dollar meal ticket when a peer feels you have gone above and beyond your duties. I usually receive 2 or 3 meal tickets every 2 weeks. Collegiality I feel quite intimidated while sharing knowledge with peers and colleges, and would like to learn how to improve on this subject in a formal setting. I am able to interact with my peers one on one to enhance my professional nursing practice and role performance, but in groups I do not usually participate. Collaboration Communication is one of my weakest properties, but is a necessity. I have improved on my communication skills in the past few years, but have much more room for growth in this area. Communication with patient families continues to present difficulties for me, while communication with patients and doctors has improved. Working midnights poses difficulties in collaboration with doctors and families, but I am proficient in collaborating with the patient coworkers and doctors by phone or communication note. Although I am proficient at collaboration I feel that I need to be more progressive in my participation of the long term plan of care by using referrals collaborative discussion, and education provided by Munson Medical Center.

Professional Development Plan 5 Ethics I feel that my personal ethical beliefs bring strength to the nursing profession, but not participating on a team or on an ethics committee can be included as one of my weaknesses. I deliver care in a manner that preserves and protects patient autonomy, dignity and rights along with maintaining confidentiality. I could serve as a better patient advocate to my patients along with reporting illegal, incompetent and impaired practice. I maintain a therapeutic and professional patient-nurse relationship with appropriate professional boundaries regardless of the actions of the patient. Research Research is probable my biggest weakness, starting at conducting the research and including critical analysis and interpretation of the research for clinical use. I simply have not had to actively participate in research for my nursing practice or for the Nursing Role Specialties. I do identify clinical problems specific to nursing research, and utilize the evidence that includes research findings to guild my practice decisions. GOALS AND PLAN 5year goal Bachelors of Science of Nursing at Ferris State University (FSU), Communication is a weakness that I possess this will be addressed while obtaining my BSN. The communication class required by FSU will improve my communication skills. Another of my weaknesses is research; this will improve through the classes at FSU including this class and the Evidence Base Paper. Caring for someone with cultural and ethnical differences is another weakness of mine. This would be improved by learning more about cultural and ethical needs for different cultures,

Professional Development Plan 6 mainly Mexican-Hispanic, and Native American. This will also be address while working on my BSN by attaining the Social Awareness and Cultural Enrichment courses required. Continued education including: Skills Day, (Munson) American Heart Association BLS-ACLS, (AHA) 10year goal Masters Degree: Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) complete, searching for CRNA positions I found many companies hiring- $100,000per year, 32,000 job openings.(the ladders) Traveling Nurse, with Google search for this many companies have availability. (RN Network) Masters Degree: Nurse Educator the nursing shortage is going to cause a huge need for educators in nursing Kaplan University online masters degree.
