PCs, pART OF UNESCOs CULTURAL WORLD HERITAGE

Pecs is the most evocative town of the country representing all cultures from the Roman era to the present day.
You can see the sacral values of an ancient Christian community buried in the ground in the cemetery complex of the Roman city. The seven-lobed chapel of the Cella Septichora Visitor Centre, the contemporary apostle images on the walls of the Peter and Paul burial chamber, the octagonal grave chapel, the Pitcher burial chamber with its painted walls, and a two-level burial site, the Early Christian mausoleum present unprecedented and priceless cultural values even among the necropolises outside Rome, which is why they have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2000. While Szchenyi Square and the city hall are the secular city centre of Pcs,

St. Stephan Square with the Roman cemetery, the Epis-copal palace, the basilica, the canons house and the denominational schools is the main square of the thousandyear old episcopacy and the second main square of the town. The four-towered St. Peter Basilica is an emblematic building of Pcs, which Pope John Paul II raised on the rank of Basilica Minor when he visited Pcs in 1990. The undercroft of the main church of the Episcope of Pcs from the 2nd century was considered the fourth largest building of its kind in Europe at that time. After multiple reconstructions the basilica has a clear look today bearing neo-Romanesque style elements. The paintings in the side chapels were made by Bertalan Szkely and Kroly Lotz. In Szepessy Ignc street, you must visit the library of the bishop Gyrgy Klim, one of the richest contemporary sources of Hungarian and European history of culture.

PCS, THE TOWN OF ZSOLNAY HERITAGE

The champagne factory was the rst in the country along with the brewery, plus eight glove manufacturers still function in Pcs.
Pcs thanks its facades decorated with ceramics and characterising the cityscape, and its colourful roofs to the Zsolnay porcelain manufacturing that has been here for over 160 years. The founder of the factory, Vilmos Zsolnay, is a symbol of innovation, and received the most signicant awards at a large number of industrial fairs and exhibitions from Vienna to Turin, from Paris to California. Today, star designers create jewels from Zsolnay porcelain, and the 150-year old glove manufacturing in the town still uses the characteristic glazed (eosin) buttons and ornaments. The Zsolnay oeuvre is shown in its entirety in the Zsolnay Museum in downtown Pcs. The most renowned public sculpture of Pcs is the Zsolnay well decorated with bull heads, next to the city hall. Our most beautiful

pyrogranite-decorated buildings are: the county hall, the Vasvry house and villa, the Csuks house, the Szerecsen drug store and the Post Palace. One of the most beautiful results of 2010 when Pcs was the Cultural Capital of Europe was the development of the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter. Here, at the largest culture complex of the country you can see a quasi-historical and Art Nouveau Zsolnay porcelain collection comprising 600 pieces, and an exhibition of exclusively pink objects made at the beginning. Detecting the symbolism of the Zsolnay Mausoleum is worth an extra trip. Small children are invited to the Bbita Puppet Theatre in the childrens quarter. Physical and chemical miracles can be tried out in the former laboratory. Shops of fashion designers and artisan chocolate makers, as well as festivals and concerts welcome visitors throughout the year.

Pcs has achieved worldwide fame because of the Zsolnay building ceramics, preserved on the most elegant buildings of Vienna, Zagreb, Belgrade and many other cities.

The former djami of Pcs is now a catholic church. Today, a cross stands on top of the half-moon preserved on the dome.
Pcs is a town rich in well-preserved buildings from the Turkish era. The largest Muslim church in Central Europe, the former Gazi Kasim Pasha Mosque stands in the main square. The ruins of the once magnicent domed bath of Memi Pasha and the intact djami and minaret of Jakovali HasSzigetvr is the most heroic Hungarian town. Birds recognise it from above not only because of its fortress and the dome of its spa, but because of the two towers of the entertainment building of Imre Makovecz.
