Interestingly, the abundance of natures treasures in the Lake Tisza region can be attributed to it being a man-made formation because of the conversion of a former oodplain of River Tisza into a huge pond, which produced an extremely diverse surface uncharacteristic of any lake of natural origin.

Lake Tisza is an Ecotouristic Island of Hungary. This statement is made unchallengeable by the very existence of the visitor centre of Lake Tisza, the Lake Tisza EcoCenter.
The marvelous scenes of Lake Tisza and the Tisza Valley that had remained hidden until recently are now displayed on 4 floors over 2,600 sq.m, irrespective of the season and the weather conditions. The main attraction is Europes largest freshwater aquarium used simultaneously as Hungarys rst water zoo designed and built to display autochthonous species. Both its dimensions and its complexity makes this system of aquaria of more than 1 million cubic metre capacity a unique facility. In addition to shes and amphibians, visitors can study habitats found in the Tisza Valley that nature organised as mini-ecosystems.

Each locality along the shores of Lake Tisza has its harbour but you should know, as well, that the most abounding natural environment can be found in the middle and northern section of the lake. The harbours of Lake Tisza can not be compared to those built at Lake Balaton or along the Danube. They are renowned for the broad variety of services oered to hikers and anglers and, in general, for the tranquil and quiet atmosphere and the proximity of nature. A peculiar feature of Lake TiSZa:

The articial creation of Lake Tisza brought about a sort of diversity not experienced anywhere else in Central Europe: a world of islands or the lake of thousand islands.
You should not expect to see the scenery islands of the South Seas adventure movies and they do not resemble Margaret Island in Budapest, either. Some of them are too small to accommodate two people, while others are covered by awe-inspiring forests interlaced with tendrils of grape ivy. HowThe halszi Island is the most peculiar of all the large islands. The one-time prosperous shing village had been destroyed by oods of River Tisza squeezed between dykes built in the second half of the 1800s rather than the formation of Lake Tisza. Today, a memorial site, a bird-watching tower and a labyrinth await tourists to this island and the descendants of earlier inhabitants living in jlrincfalva preserve the memory of Tiszahalsz. People unfamiliar with Lake Tisza would not presume that the numerous touristic attractions around the lake can also be found on islands, like our educational trails.

The most romantic island of Lake Tisza is Bulti Island located on the lakes northern segment and whose shape is characteristic to islands developing in rivers. It is several hundred metres long coupled with a mere 50 metre in width. If you happen to pass by Sluice-way No. IX, you should cast anchor for a short time just opposite to the inux.

SPECiAl METHODS OF TRANSPORT AND ADVENtUREs

The term educational trail got a new meaning at Lake Tisza where the trail is not a simple row of informative signs put down in nature, but the scene of acquiring an exciting impression about the nature.
The Lake Tisza Water Trail and Educational Path can be reached from both Poroszl and the Lake Tisza EcoCenter. It is the longest and at present the most visited planked path system is Hungary designed to exhibit the waterworld from a new perspective, by means of guaranteed guided trips. One can walk above the water along the 1,500 metre long planked path system to reach birdwatching posts, resting islands and lookout towers. In addition, qualied tour guides and information signs make the 90 to 120-minute program a complete experience.

The 127 sq.km surface of Lake Tisza compares to the aggregate surface of 100,000 competition swimming pools and the lake holds approx. 150 million cubic metres of water in summer. Lake Tisza is four times bigger than Lake Velence and its volume is equal to

Robin Adventure Island Tiszafred

The Mayy Flood-Plain Promenade can be reached from Tiszafred-rvny and, in addition to exhibiting the ora and fauna of the ood-plain forests, it demonstrates the critical phase of the life of mayies, one of the most peculiar creatures of the fauna of River Tisza. On the backwater of Tisza at Tiszafred a unique park can be found. The 18-hectare ground of the Robin Adventure Island has a 140-obstacle course including a zip wire line, a 15-meter high wall for hobby and competition climbing, 300-400 metre long rope-slides, forest gym course and playground, minigolf, archery eld, zorb, water kangaroo and many other interesting games. The chain of adventures is supplemented by two educational trails where one can get acquainted with the secret life of beavers or the birds living in nests hidden in the foliage.

Birds are the most spectacular inhabitants of Lake Tisza and the lakes protected area was named after them: the Bird Nature Reserve of Lake Tisza.
Lake Tisza plays a crucial part in the birds life by providing places to nest, feed and rest for more than 200 species. We recommend everyone to participate in early-dawn birdwatching trips during the best periods, in July, August or September. You can see motionless grey herons standing on a stump and holding, in the next moment, a sh wriggling in its ble the weapon of the Middle Ages. Also, we can see great cormorants and their rarely encountered small siblings, the pygmy cormorants, in addition to great white egrets, night herons or, as of mid-July, the most charming species of herons, the squacco herons. A special moment can be enjoyed when a kingsher, the most colorful bird of the lake, also known as the ying gem tries its wings above the water of the sluice-way. The clusters of nests should not be approached and, really, it is better to observe the birds undisturbed while they are eating. Lake Tisza plays an important role in facilitating bird migration. Bathing in Lake Tisza

This is an exceptional route because the bicycle track runs around the lake with practically no altitude dierence and is closed to public traffic. It is ideal for beginners, elderly people and for families with small children. In addition to the exceptionally comfortable riding conditions, the cyclist-friendly environment (service stations, rent-a-bike services, childfriendly and protective gear, tour guides and 1200 km long recommended routes) makes organis- ation of short or longer trips between spring and autumn a great choice.

Members of the Lake Tisza Tourism Centre Network located in almost every lakeside locality between Tiszajvros and Karcag are glad to oer their assistance. The most favoured route includes crossing the lake by riding on Highway No.33. Until the completion of a separate cyclist track that is being built to increase safety of the riders, it is safe, comfortable and enjoyable to cross the lake by ferry operated at Tiszadorogma, Tiszacsege, Nagykr and Tiszaro where restaurants, bars and buets await tired cyclists. The very sight of the lake induces relaxation, but the real pleasure comes when immersing in the water for refreshment and a coolling sensation. Free beaches have been installed at six locations around Lake Tisza. Each has its own exciting specialty or interesting

At Kiskre, the campsite co-operates with the local beach and turboslide park to oer numerous programs. Families may prefer the quieter beach of Poroszl where the bottom of the lake deepens slowly. The popular summer camps for children are considered a real paradise in Sarud, while Tiszanna developed a romantic Dream Beach for people preferring quiet seclusion.

A shorter or longer detour could reasonably be inserted in our bicycle itinerary, heading towards the Heves Plain, the Borsod Champaign-land, the Hortobgy or even towards Nagykunsg.
Riding around Lake Tisza provides a special experience. One should recognise, however, the multitude of marvelous natural scenery, nation-

al parks, nature and landscape conservation regions and cheerful villages that are here to be explored. The maps provided in the tour centres suggest two types of routes for the cyclists. Either you ride along public roads of moderately dense traffic, connecting small localities to be discovered or, more frequently, along dirt roads or the top of dikes for people wanting to discover real o-the-beaten-track nature. We recommend these latter routes only to experienced cyclists riding trek bicycles, in dry weather.

The no-traffic zones of asphalt-coated roads built on the top of emergency reservoirs to diminish the risk of ooding, provide a new opportunity comparable with the cycle treks surrounding Lake Tisza and adding approx. 100 km of high-quality tour routes in the vicinity of Tiszaroff, Pusztataskony, Kunhegyes and Tiszasly. South-west of the lake, ferries operate between Tiszaroff and Tiszasly or Fegyvernek and Nagykr provide an opportunity to cross River Tisza. In the course of cycling, we can also visit other localities and landscapes, which are less renowned but have some interesting characteristics or attractions. It is worth riding to Karcag, the capital of Nagykunsg, to taste the local mutton-stew or to see places of interest in the Borsod Champaign-land.

Lake Tisza is contiguous to Hortobgy, Europes largest steppe. This fact, in itself, is sufficient to remind us of the possibilities for horse riding.
In addition, we have several arguments to say that horse riding really must be tried in this environment. There are only a few equestrian farms in this region, but they oer ideal riding programs for everyone, such as riding camps for children or lead riding for novice adults. One thing is certain: anyone sufficiently experiAdvanced riders can ride on horseback around the lake. The 100 km route can easi ly be covered in three days. Unlike the prog rams oered at other places, here you can enjoy breaking into a gallop neck and neck with eight to ten other horses, occupying the greensward that stretche beside the dikes, crossing the river by ferry or taking a bath in the river. We can feel the overlapping of various ages when the hoofs of our horses thud against the bridge of the Stepped Weir at Kiskre, riding on Hungarys largest hydroelectric facility, while using one of the most ancient means of transport.

In Hungary, there are not many options to take part in riding trips in more remote parts of the country. However at Lake Tisza, this is possible and visitors can enjoy being part of exciting horse riding events, which can not be experienced in riding centres in the suburbs of big cities.

This is a unique way to explore paths hidden in the maze of riparian reed-beds and on the way many possibilities can arise for listening to the tune of nature. One should head for Poroszl Bay or Tiszavalk Bay to explore the most diverse natural environments of the lake. For a trip by canoe, you should hire a tour guide to get an all-embracing experience and to ensure safety. The diversity of a wonderful pristine landscape and habitat surprised us. A multitude of programs is available for both the tourists looking for active leisure and those wishing to rest in a relaxing environment. Although angling means for most people line-shing standing on the shore, there is the opportunity here to try it sitting in a at-boat that can be paddled to hidden spots, as well. One can store or hire shing boats at every harbour of the lake. The lake is a unique place for testing shing methods and for looking for the most suitable shing sites. Nowhere else can such variety be found!

One can startle giant catsh lying in the mud of Tisza as deep as 20 metres out of their early dawn slumber. One can spin asps twirling in the water of the sluice-ways or can check the result of having thrown food in the water for feeding common carps near the edge of reed-beds or can try catching some of the big tenches swarming in the lake. Even young and novice shermen can successfully catch some of the billions of breams and that experience can enthrall them to become fervent fans of this sport and to learn to restore their peace of mind this way. To remain on the safe side, hire a local shing guide in the ports.

Berekfrd, a small Kuman locality with several hundred inhabitants, is a real treasure box of the hinterland of Lake Tisza and a destination for patients looking for classic medicinal recreation.
BEREKFRD Owing to the miraculous medicinal water, known as the gold of Nagykunsg, Berekfrd became a pilgrimage centre for patients suering from locomotory diseases. With the passing of time, the Water of Berek became renowned and it healed many people, winning their respect. Thermal Bath & Spa Berekfrd

It is worth stopping or even staying for several days in this youngish, buoyant and sporty town, particularly to try the advanced Medicinal Bath and Spa, where the thermal water can help cure arthritis, chronic gynaecological and urological illnesses. Owing to its stress relieving eects, the water also offers pleasant relaxation to people looking for some rest from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Guests can choose from three pools of varying water temperature in the stately building. The adjacent 7-hectare park accommodates six fun pools, a castle pool, an adventure pool and a wave pool, plusgiant splashdown slides Anaconda and Kamikaze, grassy areas for sunbathing, sport grounds, playground and a row of boutiques and shops, ensuring enjoyment for the whole family.
