Animal Testing

Purpose and Intention

Inform the cruelty of testing cosmetics on animals

Persuade people to stop using animals as test subjects Offer alternatives

Good and Bad Testing

3

Certain tests are necessary for the development of

human health

Learning about the brain through tests on rats Learning about eyes through tests on cats

That rhymed

Cosmetic tests do not promote human health and

development, therefore they are unnecessary

Animals should not be used in cosmetic experiments

Animals are living creatures
Animals can be physically and psychologically

harmed Cosmetic testing on animals is not always necessary

Animals are living creatures

5

Animals are eukaryotes Have a nucleus Have DNA Are multicellular Are diploid

Two sets of genetic material in cells

6

Animals are heterotrophs They need carbon for growth, development and reproduction They ingest organisms as a means of obtaining the carbon they need Plants absorb energy from the sun, making them autotrophs

7

Animals are capable of movement

Most animals are capable of sexual reproduction,

although some are able to reproduce asexually

Animals can be physically harmed

8

Animals are left with wounds that dont heal The most common way of testing is on the skin, which leads to rashes and infections
Animals are left blind after experiments Chemicals dripped in eyes often cause blindness

Physical Harm
9

Animals are often not treated medically after testing,

which ultimately leads to death

*All information from http://www.ehow.com/list_6708821_effects-animal-testing.html

Animals can be psychologically harmed

10

Animals develop a distrust for humans

Animals are genetically mutated Mutations can cause the animal to be unable to properly interact with other animals

Animals experience extreme pain causing them to

refuse to eat

Tests Performed on Animals

11

Skin and eye irritation Most common Chemicals are rubbed onto the shaved skin or dipped into the eyes of restrained rabbits without any pain relief (http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/cosmetic_testing/qa/)
Other tests involve animals inhaling or swallowing

toxins and observing how long they live during a 14 day period
(http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/cosmetic_testing/qa/questions_answer s.html)

Animal
12

Any living thing in the kingdom Animalia other than

a human

Cosmetic
15

A powder, lotion, lipstick, rouge, or other prparation

for beautifying the face, skin, hair, nails, etc.

History
17

The Animal Welfare Act (Laboratory Animal Welfare

Act of 1966) was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on August 24, 1966 It is the only federal law in the US that regulates the treatment of animals in research

The Facts
18

An estimated 14-17 million animals are used in

experiments each year 50% of animals used in cosmetic testing die within three weeks of the experiment Rodents, birds and reptiles are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act, so scientists are not required to provide pain relief An estimated 92% of tests passed on animals failed when tried on humans

Alternative
21

LOreal has completely eliminated animal testing and

is now using human skin approved for testing

This skin comes from left over breast surgery The team [of scientists] can test the safety of cosmetics by simply smothering the skin in the product...[and checking] the proportion of cells that have been killed off (Merali, 2007).

Conclusion
22

If this alternative is adopted, there will be a decrease

in cosmetic production at first, but animals would be spared the agony of testing Cosmetic products would become more organic Sales would increase on products already on the market
